Off Topic... Are you really thinking about paying someone to coach you at hold em? I know you'll do your research but there are definitely tons of "experts" out there in that world too. Before you hire a coach, did you ever read the Dan Harrington's books? He has 3 on tournaments and I think another 3 on cash, maybe just 2. They are very easy reads, not overly technical like Sklansky's stuff but very good information, theory and scenarios to demonstrate and then test you on the topics. Good step before hiring a coach.
Good article though. Curious how people will receive it. No one wants to admit they're a bullshitter and definitely no one wants to admit they hired a bullshitter...
Another winner Skip! I think this forum (particularly the vets and mods), unlike many others, does a great job of keeping these bullshitters at bay by consistently challenging unsubstantiated advice and the credentials of someone providing "insight."
Yes, there might be a money factor involved with choosing a lesser "coach" but the person putting on the persona of a fitness expert who has minimal experience and credentials must either be a marketing genius or the trainees they are targeting must be incredibly naive and have no concept of value. I love the line at the end, "natural selection weeds out the weak, I'm just here to help."

Skip is right on. I've been around bodybuilding and have been a trainer for 20 years, but being a contest prep coach takes more than a little knowledge. I have trained others and got them into great shape using various diets, but contest prep is a different animal all together. My goal when I retire from my 9-5 is to do this, but I am being mentored by someone with years of experience working with others and competing himself. I'm not jumping right into it while presenting myself as a prep expert. I'm taking my time by shadowing him with other clients preps. Even when I feel ready I'm going to have him assist me in the process with clients. I'm going to learn as much as I can to learn the ins and outs of prepping someone else before I'd ever consider taking money for it. The problem with a lot of these people is that they think all you need is some information you can get from a book or magazine, but that isn't the case. I was telling my coach the other day that there is more to prepping for a show than the science behind fat loss and looking good. At some point experience plays a larger role in the success of a prep. At some point the science goes away and it becomes more of an art form. Another great article Skip.
I remember at my last show a young kid told me he was paying a bunch of money to some guy over the internet from Europe. The guy told him not to eat anything the day before the show or the morning of the show. I told him to drop the guy immediately. Poor kid.

Glad that this article has been well-received at least at this early stage.
Adam: I have considered hiring someone but the truth is that I think I am becoming pretty good on a consistent basis at this early stage in my poker "career". I am not great but I am pretty good considering the time I have put in so far. I try to play at least a game a day and sometimes a few games. I think the best way to get better is to simply play more and log hours. I do read books and find the different strategies very interesting. This is a game that could consume me so my first promise to myself was that I need to keep it fun and not obsess over it. To me, playing is calming, believe it or not. I find it much like a chess game where I am trying to manipulate you out of your money.

I don't want anyone to get into trouble but if you are on other boards and are able to post a link to my articles, please do. The more exposure I can get with these articles, the better.
Thanks!

That's probably the reason for a lot of your success right there! Huge point people miss.
About the articles... How often are you writing? I had thought it was going to be a monthly thing but seems more frequent. I like your topics so far. Controversial, interesting and simple.
Haha, I know exactly what "kid" you are talking about. At least I hope I do, no way there is more than one 16yr old making a stab at contest prep right now.
Actually, he is in my back yard. I think I will hire him for my next prep, and then let you know all the things you don't know. Consider it a favor, now you owe me.
My rant column is bi-weekly and then I have a training or nutrition article once a month so almost an article a week every month.
