im not even going to try and explain why this is through the internet, but in order for me to get a full range of motion while doing standing barbell curls i have to lean forward a bit; this obviously puts a lot of strain on my lower back and my form as a result is crappy

so i guess my question is will i end up injuring myself like this, should i just try and get by with dumbell curls and preachers? BC's always are thought of as the primary bicep exercise...

    Hey Pirate!

You might wanna try to place your heels on something about 0,5 inch thick. Maybe a couple of small weights. Also bend your knees just a little. I always do this for standing curls and it works just fine, and keeps the stress off my lower back.

Wow, in all these years I have never contemplated that. My ROM is only 3/4's the way as my arms stop at that point. That has always infringed how I do various exs but we have to live with our genetics so why worry. I simply pin my elbows into my sides and bend them as far as I can contract them and leave it at that.

thanks thats helpful; i think ill try it

and lifter, the correct ending position should have ur arms going 3/4 the way up, so you're doing them correctly, my problem is different, like i said its hard to explain

yeah tell me about it...in a nut shell its because my shoulders arent wide enough

i guess i should be asking, could dumbell curls eventually get the same results as barbell curls?

Lifter, I'm concerned about your "shortened" range of motion. Do you do the extreme biceps stretch?

Chris I have a problem using a straight bar because I can't fully supinate my hand.
You say that you can't do a full range because of your shoulders aren't wide enough. Are you referring to the knurls on the ez curl bar, because if you can do a straight bar, go ahead?.

Which part of the ROM are you guys referring to?

ain't it the shit? Just wait til you guys/gals see some of the strength jumps lol..and the size you put on!
              Good luck

no i was talking about a straight bar

i believe the ROM lifter is referring to is the fact that your palms do not touch your shoulders at the acme of the lift

what im referring to is extremely hard to explain, so i was just wondering if i could get the same results from dumbells

I see no reason why you shouldn't get good (the same) results with dumbells but you don't have many choices of exercises if you limit yourself to dumbbells so that could be a problem.

Chris, can you try your best to explain your situation. Just so we can better help you.

I'll start, I had a birth defect that does not allow me to fully supinate my left hand. I've put so much effort into using and bringing up my left that it sometimes is either bigger or stronger. I simply cannot use a straight bar. I can use certain ez curl bars and I was/am going to purchase that bar that had the circular spinning handgrips called the supra bar:

Jim, so basically that type of bar just has the handles move wherever your hands move?

I believe so Allen. I can't turn my hand much past a hammer position on my left hand so that bar seems like the best choice for my bar curls. There are times that even a highly "curled" ezcurl bar can bother me.
