  • How much do you successfull DCers rely on MRPs, weightgainers and protein powders?

I want to ask all the sucsessful and tenured DC trainers roughly what percentage of your diet comes from whole food and what else comes from powdered drinks (MRPs, weightgainers, protein powder). I realize this is a large part of what people pay for when they hire dogg to train them, but so i don't expect a really in depth explaination, but ballpark. This is pulled from the original "cycles for pennies" thread from way long ago.

    DOGG WROTE:

A sample (truthfull) day for me is (with protein grams after each item)

breakfast: oatmeal(5) with soy grits and ground flaxseeds on top (23) a little bit of milk(2) in the oatmeal and a protein drink (55)=85grams

afterworkout snack-two potatoes(7) and a double serving protein drink in cranberry grape juice (110) =117grams

lunch (quick one cuz of my work)-can of ravioli (11) and protein drink(65) (cup of water cup of milk in there) =76grams

snack--two 99cent bigmacs(54) and 2 cups of milk (20)=74 grams (hey I could lie and say a turkey on wheat but im being truthfull here)

dinner -1lb of hamburger (100) cooked drained and then washed off with water thoroughly (to remove as much fat as possible)with condiments and noodles (4) =104grams

I keep reasonably lean by taking in zero to trace amounts of carbs (found in vegetables) after 6-7pm

nitetime meal-six eggwhite omelet with peppers or peas(20) or roast beef cold cuts with half water-half milk protein drink (65) =85 grams

Thats 541 protein grams on average and with me usually eating larger portions than measured I probaly venture toward 600 grams alot. If you look at the food I eat its pretty cheap, specially the way I buy it in bulk.
so i added it all up and he gets 275g of protein just from his protein powder (which was ON pro complex, a whey and egg combo) that amounts to 51% of his total for that day.

do you guys find thats about right, 50% of protein comes in form of powdered drinks?

I will not give a percentage b/c of loyalty to dante and his paying clients, but I go through over 10lbs of protein powder a month

Getting protein from whole foods is great and highly recommended, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with adding a little powder to each meal in the form of a shake to get that protein really up there. Great spectrum of AAs, very nice absorption, etc etc. So yea, nothing wrong with that at all. Also remember that Dante was getting in glutamine throughout the day with the Pro Complex. I dunno how much you weigh but for me twice bodyweight in grams of protein is right around 500g. That's not an extremely easy task to get 500g of protein from whole foods alone day in and day out. Now if you were eating filet mignon or NY strips for every meal then I guess 500g is pretty achievable, but I can't really afford that so I'm stuck with things like ground turkey, eggs, ground beef, chicken breasts, chicken leg quarters, things like taht for protein sources. Now these things are great and are very tasty, but eating enough of those things to get that much protein in is almost impossible and I'm a big eater. So to make it easier on yourself, there's nothing wrong with having say 8oz lean ground turkey along with a 25g shake mixed in some low-carb milk or whatever. On a non-workout day where I'm getting 500g protein and none of that comes from a post workout shake, I'd say that I get maybe 100g of that from powder.

Just try to get the majority of your protein from whole food,... personally I get the majority of my protein intake from shakes because it's cost effective for me but I at least get some whole protein in every meal with the shake.

I do the same as USMuscle...I eat as much whole food protein as I can and make up the difference with powder.....MRP's and weightgainers?.....Don't use them..I'd rather get my carb calories from food...(except postworkout which is dextrose etc...)

Yeah, no reason to spend the money on that, whole food is better.

I had never read that post about what DC ate, but that is really great. I mean, he is being completely upfront with what he ate as opposed to all these pros who say they eat this and that, but you know it isn't true because no human being could eat that strict all the time unless they had a disorder of some kind. Props for the honesty DC.

I had one today actually, lol. So I guess it is coming pretty good. While FH dines on the two double steak burritos, I stick with a double or triple steak burrito.

Nice link, I swear these things are such a gold mine. It kind of sucks the McD's has taken them over, but so far nothing has really changed and I hope it stays that way. If the portion sizes start to shrink (which I highly doubt they will unless they use smaller spoons to dish out everything) I will be pissed. New ones have opened up around here and they still give you the large portion sizes of the old. Nothing compares to the old one in KC that would often have to wrap a burrito with two tortilla's to hold everything together. They also used to not charge for extra meat or gauc back in the day.

A lot depends on when you go as well. I like to go between lunch and dinner, say around 3:00 PM and they really give you a lot of meat. Meat is the one thing they tend to skimp on sometimes if you aren't careful. I eat so much at one place that two of the guys working behind the counter always remember me and usually give me a ton of meat. I also know when to order triple meat, as I can usually get it for the price of single meat if I am there at the right time. Damn, am I obsessed enought with this place or what? lol

We recently had a Qdoba open locally, and it's similar to Chipotle. It's a little pricey when you start getting two and adding double meat.

About the protein shakes. I usually have 2 (one mid-morning and one before bed) on non-workout days and 4 or 5 solid meals, so about 30%.
