  • Paralell Bar Dips

    Just wondering what muscle group you guys categorise this exercise in. It seems to be a compound movement for Chest, Shoulders and Triceps. I have been using it in my chest repetiore, but have recently questioned whether it should be in shoulders or maybe moreso triceps.

    Anyone have any opinions/preferences on it?

    If you are leaning forward I would group it under chest.

      Ron we usually use dips for triceps. I usually do them in the "upright" position as much as possible.
      ain't it the shit? Just wait til you guys/gals see some of the strength jumps lol..and the size you put on!

        For your chest, you want to be facing the ground and leaning foward. For your tri's, you want to look up and try to be as upright as possible.

            Sounds like a good idea, im going to switch it over into my triceps pool of exercises. Then put another incline movement for chest. One thing i noticed about dips was that the upper area of the pectorals didnt recieve as much focus as the lower portion.

            I know some would say that its splitting hairs, but i truly believe that you can emphasise certain parts of the chest. i,e upper/lower.

              of course you can emphasise certain parts of the chest or else there would be only one chest exercise

                We have 2 different dip bars, one is wider so it forces more chest action.

                  I personally count it as a tricep excersize. Machine inclines, then smith military, then hit the dip bar. One of my favorite days.

                    I am not to very found of using dips for chest although it works well, after flat bench press it is one of the most dangerous chest exercises so I'd rather choose some other safer exercise, but using dips for triceps should be safer I think.

                      how do you figure it's one of the most dangerous (chest) exercises? as long as you stop upper arms ~parallel to ground it's not insanely risky

                        I remember that Dante mentioned that, and I also feel that it puts pretty much stress on the chest,....... it might be a little safer if you stop parallel to the ground (I'm not sure though),.... I'm not saying that you shouldn't do them, just be careful.

                          Since I use Dips as a primary Tricep exercise, I use the dip bar that is not wide, it focus more on the tricep target, and possibly it eliminates the risk of injury on the rotator cuffs since the wider the bar the harder it hits the rotator.
