  • Need help. Fasting coming up!

    Hey guys. I would done this over at MM but I just dont think I'd get the advice I'm looking for over there.

    Since I'm muslim every year I have to fast for a month. This means from somewhere around 5-6am to 3-4pm. No food, no water, nothing for that period of time. Kinda like sleeping only you cant sleep lol.

    At the moment i work out at around 7.30 am which is like not gonna be possible while fasting since i wont even be able to have a post workout shake. So my workout time is gonna move to around 9.30pm or so.

    I was hoping for some help from you guys to figure out the best things to do while fasting to hold onto muscle and still be able to workout.

    I mean if I can still eat from 4pm onwards until 5-6am then that means its jus reversing my usual intake i think. Because when i sleep from 10pm-6pm, i get nothing in.

    So heres what its kinda lookin like right now

    5am - Pre fasting meal

    6am - the fasting begins

    4pm- Post fasting meal

    7pm - Meal

    9.30pm - Workout

    11pm - Post workout Shake

    12 am - Post workout Meal

    3am - Middle of sleep Shake.

    Ok so thats how i was looking at it. I'd still get 6 meals in, I'd have to wake up to take a shake but i think thats important to keep feeding my body.

    I was wondering what kind of stuff i should be eating or drinking before the fast begins and when I stop fasting. I know its gonna have to be alot of protein and probably plenty of carbs before the fast begins, but what about afterwards?

    And since the postworkout meal is right before i sleep should it still consist of carbs?

    GOOD.. NOTHING I'D CHANGE HERE. bEING ONLY 2 HOURS FROM YOUR NEXT MEAL, EVERYTHING WOULD BE FLOWIN' NICELY.

    YUP, I'D RECKON LOTSA COMPLEX AND FIBROUS CARBS PRE-FAST. EVERYTHING YOU MENTIONED IS LOOKING GREAT. POST-FAST, I'D GO COMPLEX CARBS PLUS SOME FRUIT TO REFILL YOUR LIVER GLYCOGEN. THE 2ND MEAL POST-FAST SHOULD BE ROUGHLY THE SAME, WITH S AMALL FRUIT TOO. THE GI OF THIS MEAL SHOULD BE PROPORTIONAL TO HOW SOON YOUR WORKOUT WOULD BE FROM THIS MEAL.. MED-HIGHER GI IF WORKOUT IS NERARER AND SO ON. THE FRUIT IS TO ENSURE THAT LIVER GLYCOGEN IS CONFIRMED FULL TO ENSURE MAXIMAL WORKOUT PERFORMANCE.

    And since the postworkout meal is right before i sleep should it still consist of carbs?
    IF YOU'RE CONCERNED BOUT FAT STORAGE, THOUGH YOU SHOULDN'T BE WITH A NOT OVER THE TOP CARB MEAL.. LOW GI MAY BE FINE.. BUT YOU CAN DEFINITELY GO PRO-FAT IN THIS MEAL AFTER THE SIMPLE CARBS FROM YOUR PWO SHAKE MAY HAVE FILLED YOUR MUSCLE GLYCOGEN STORES..

    Hey asim, are you malay? Hm.. been in a country where people fast during hari raya puasa each year.. is it the same festival there too? Man, all my malay friends go through this each year and i'm real surprised at their determination and boudless energy they still have aeven during the fast.. wow.

        Im pakistani, living in scotland, and im Muslim. What im doing is called ramadan. Fasting for 30 days.

            It is basically fasting from sunrise to sunset but we dont call it what u said. We call it ramadan or ramazan.

              its ok man, i used to watch care bears too except i was like 3-4. they were awesome.. CAREBEAR STARE!!!

              asim i'd take thinks by ear on the workouts and go easy some days if needed. and yes, you can have carbs with your postworkout meal even though its late. i just noticed your meal was seperate from the shake - if you can sort of merge them together and eat solid carbs with the postworkout shake and protein seperately at the postworkout meal i think that would work well.

                some sound advice there, ive never really taken the time to listen to my body im one of these plan it and do people.

                i usually take in simple carbs with my shake in the form of grape juice. but the solid carbs could work too.

                  keep the grape juice w/ shake - just add some solid carbs to it.

                  i'm also a plan and do kind of person in the sense that i like to figure out how i'm going to do it and then do it, but sometimes things need modification - maybe one day you're feeling like crap, maybe just go with straight sets that day if needed. or if its on a friday just do it on saturday since MWF and MWS makes no difference. just common sense stuff mostly so you'll be fine.

                  can you take amino acids/glutamine in your water during the fast?

                    oh yeah, and even if you do lose some it will come back quickly so dont worry too much about it.

                      Cant even drink water during the fast!

                      Right now im doin like a mon,th,sat split cause its the only time ive got in the mornings. Now having to workout at night means changing the split again. Only this time its gotta be rearranged so that i can go in on days when there are less people.
                      so most likely w,f,sun or somethin like that.

                      if im taking in 6 meals and maintaining my 400+ protein intake and taking in enough carbs i should be ok. I mean everytime ive fasted i've done it completely different. Last year i took the entire month off to rest my shoulders and i was weak after that. the year before i went to the gym and ate around 200g of protein and survived.

                      with the added intake hopefully i'll be fine.

                        Just out of curiosity: Why the fasting during the day only to stuff yourself at night? I know it's your religious beliefs but what is the purpose behind it? I'm curious of the religious aspect of it. I'm not very familiar with Ramadan.

                          Ramadan is there to show us the healthy and wealthy people the suffering of those in the 3rd world countries. Every year anyone who is actually able to participate should do. Your suppose to feel the hunger an pain of those who starve. Its to really bring you closer to God and make you think alot more about your fellow man. Each time i do it i am brought closer to God and I do care for other people alot more.
