  • Tendonitis

OK, I have had bouts with tendonitis for a couple years now. It was not so bad and I just waited for it to relieve itself, but tonight it's just a terrible pain. Anyone know anything else to get some quick relief besides ice? Man it hurts It's a bad combination of a throbbing and shooting pain at the base fo the triceps near the elbow and it shoots all the way through my forearm to where it's making my hand numb, I have NEVER had that happen before. Any help?

Which part of your hand is numb? Is it primarily on your pinky and ring finger? Also, does the numbness or tingling increase if you put pressure on your medial or underside of the forearm for an extended amount of time?

If your hand is continually going numb and your pinky and ring finger really experience this, then you have pressure on your ulnar nerve. If this continues without relief over time you can run the risk of permanent damage. A simple surgical procedure can be done to relieve pressure on the nerve if need be. However, simply taking some time off from the gym, then using wraps and ice when you get back you should be able to avoid this. Also, you may want to try ART as it has benefits with restoring normal neural functioning and relieving stress associated with compartmental syndrome. Go to an M.D. or 2 and get an opinion.

In general tendonitis isn't going to give you radicular numbness. Something is compressing a nerve at some point - could be any number of things. The first thing I would do is STOP using wraps in the elbow region if you are. If you are having an issue with a nerve being compressed, compressing it more will only make things worse. There is also always the possibility that what you have been experiencing in the triceps has been coming from someplace higher up (like your neck) and is just getting slightly worse and radiating further. In any case - it sounds more nerve related than tendon related, simply because of the numbness.
My recommendations would be to ice where it hurts, and try to get in to see a doctor to rule out neurological involvement. This may involve an EMG to determine the exact location of the nerve compression...

I had the same exact pain your experincing now. It started at my pinky came up my forearm/bicep/shoulder and my neck. It was absolute brutality and almost left me pansing like a little girl. It occured back a few months into working out so I went back and looked at what exercise might be causing it and removed them from my routine, took some rest and the pain disappeared after a week. Preacher curls are what did me in. Give it some rest and ice it well.

US, You are having this problem mainly from working chest, you are going heavy when doing your RP worksets and you are bending your wrist backwards and causing Carpel Tunnel, I get this all the time and the only way I fix it is with Electrostimulation and ice for 15 minutes ED and Ultra Sound for 6 minutes ED for 2 weeks. I wear the best wrist wraps I can find and I neoprene sleeves on my elbows when doing any pushing exercises. You must concentrate on keeping your wrist straight when benching and doing pushing exercises...
