At my gym....we have a very old Smythe Machine, and the owner tells me it's 70lbs......it does sure feel like it.....but I don't count the weight of the bar. Only the plates.

You can find out exactly what each Smythe bar weighs, get the Manufacturers name, look it up on the website and contact them, most of them weight between 15-25 lbs...

honestly who cares what it weighs as long as you are getting stronger. It is all relative in my mind as long as you are kicking the log books ass each week. You can say it weighs 46 lbs if it makes you feel warm and fuzy inside as long as you do more this workout than you did before.

I count the smith bar as 0lbs. All I am concerned with is increasing my reps/strength with each workout. I'm not 100% sure what the weight is, so I don't guess. I've dropped the whole ego thing and I am only concerned with reps now and increasing my poundages.

i dont care how much mine weights.. i just call it 45 for simplicity reasons when counting. almost like checking the starting resistance on the leg press if you ask me. but as long as it keeps going up, i'm happy.

For simplicity's sake, I count it as 45 lbs too. Is that what it really weighs? I really don't care as long as the weight I'm ADDING to it keeps going up. But, yes, I count it as 45.

TLM just calls is BAR or B for short. As in B+70 on incline bench.

Arn't the bars on smith machines usually counter-weighed so you don't include it?

I mean, if you're just counting it as 45 for the hell of it, i could count my olympic bar as 700pds just for the hell of it....w00t, i now bench over 1000pds :showoff:

If any one of you are logging anything but whats on one side of the bar (whether its olympic bar, smythe, ez curl, you name it)--your making things very hard on yourself. If i squat 4 plates each side on a free bar squat my logbook says 180x8. If i squat 4 plates on each side of a counterweighted smythe machine my logbook says 180x8 (whats on one side of the bar), leg press 540 x 10 (one side of the bar), tricep extensions 70 x 15 (one side of the bar).....there is no need to make this more difficult for yourself, noone but you is looking at the logbook so instead of counting things up in your head all the time to get true weights -- all you need is one side of the bar.....(works mentally too--because you dont get psyched out by a big number in the logbook and you think your a pussy because the poundage is so low-LOL)
