  • L-Arginine

I was wondering if all L-Arginine powders tasted like complete dog piss or if the powder that i have is old (if that can even happen). I have tried everything to mask the taste. Coffee does little to help it and mixing it with milk almost made me throw up. I can tolerate a lot of horrible food or drinks but this is unbearable. I have not tried it with juice or anything as i was not sure if it decreased its effects like it acidic juices possibly do with creatine. Any help here?

    thanks

Juice and creatine has always worked well together, for me at least. I mix the arginine and a bunch of other stuff with a strong juice or crystal light. Crystal light pink lemonade is pretty awesome.

      Juice works well with everything

"Juice" alone works wonders infact, hahaha.

I think all aminos, especially L-arginine, taste like battery acid. I generally mix it with lime juice or with gatorade/whey.

So.. creatine is ok to use with juice? Do powder supplements expire?

Not sure about the expiration but I remember grape juice and creatine were huge 10 years ago. Pretty sure there is actual science backing up grape juice and creatine. If you're concerned tey crystal light or Gatorade. I've tried both with arginine and other god awful aminos and they're hardly noticeable.

The thing with juices though are that they are high in fructose and due to the way fructose is metabolized it will not create the same insulin response as something like dextrose (which I am assuming you are trying to do by consuming creatine with a carb source).

As far as amino acids, I just mix mine with a little crystal light lemonade and it actually tastes pretty good. Just like a little sourness to the lemonade.

Arginine tastes HORRIBLE. However, I've found that if you put a teaspoon or two into a protein shake with 1 or 2 scoops of protein, then you can't taste the arginine at all.

And yes, I've found acidity does help mask the taste of awful supplements. The best thing I've found to do is mix shit with lemonade flavor Crystal Light (or the generic brand thereof). That seems to mask the awful taste very effectively.

There's also something to do with an enzyme that helps gastric absorption happen on stuff that's normally absorbed through the intestine.

I believe this is limited to grape and pineapple juice only.

Will have to dig up some articles on this.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. Hopefully this will help me get the arginine down.

Yes, Arginine is one of the most fowl tasting sup's you can drink. I agree with the others that crystal light should help out a lot.

i bought the caplets... it was worth it to me to trade off the battery acid flavor and have the protability of caps in my little pill divider for the increase in $$ it cost

Right on....I mix my L-Leucine (tastes like shit too) into my shakes or with some crystal light and it's alright. The bitterness has actually grown on in me.....I prefer my shakes with some Leucine these days, but I'm guessing I'm alone in that.

I've been using Leucine 4:1:1 a bit more frequently instead of just plain leucine, and like you said, the tartness grows on you and now I enjoy it.

When I get bored or feel like I am in an anabolic lull, I do lines of leucine. You guys should try it...we can all get together and have a leucine party. It's all the rage

LMAO! I'm down to snow-blow some Leucine lines.

In all seriousness.....how are you responding to the Leucine, Mental? The last couple of months I've been adding 5-10 grams in every shake (2 every day, not including PWO) and mixing in 5 grams amount into some crystal light 10 minutes before each solid food meal and I've hardened up a bit while shedding some BF, all while eating something like 2800-3000 calories per day, and this is all while training with the conjugate method, so it's not as if I've been training for size.

It's pretty cheap, too, so I think I'm going to continue on with it and when I go back into a volume training phase after reaching my strength goals I'm gonna use even more of it.

I'm not using leucine with every meal/shake, just at certain times. Keep in mind, leucine is just ONE amino acid and the rest of the EAAs/BCAAs are also very important. Homonunculus schooled me a bit on some really cool stuff about amino acids a week of two ago when we were talking about a particular study. Basically one of the take-aways for me was that, beyond a certain limit, adding more leucine than is already contained in a particular protein will not provide any further benefit.

We started using more amino acids to ease up on my digestive system and one of the biggest differences I have noticed is that I am able to train harder (due to no bloating) and my recovery is phenomenal. My logbook is starting to get scared of me lol But my weight has continued to go up and strength is going through the roof, so whatever we are doing, it is working

Like you said, amino acids are also very cost effective. If you look at the alternatives, like peptopro or even a high quality isolate, you get more bang for your buck with amino acid powders, so why not put them into play strategically along with a solid nutrition plan, right?
