  • Mental Masterbation

I dont get it.........really I dont.....I see it time and time again....almost everytime I go to the gym now. Just friday I watched two guys doin smith machine squats, start out plate each side then squat down six inches .......SIX INCHES my 6yr old knows how to do full squats from karate for real the lil turd gets in trouble and goes to the corner and busts out however many butt to the floor squats. So then these two guys at the gym throw on another plate each side and do the same thing for a few hardcore (yeah right) sets.....geeez so whatever huh..... then not 15 min later I see two other guys doin standing barbell curls 10lbs a side swinging back like they where doin the limbo..... The thing that gets me is the people really think thats how you lift and thats a full range of motion.....Then they look at me like some crack head when I do fascia stretches....well at least I dont mentally masterbate......I would really like to help some of these guys out but I just keep my mouth shut and do my thing.......do you guys see or say anything when you see this....

I engage in mental masturbation every day....not in the sense you speak of however.

Yes, I frequently see people doing the very same thing you are writing about.

People squating like that make me laugh. Sometimes I will say something to them....other times I won't. Just depends...some people can take constructive criticism, others can't.

I think most guys that lift like that are on an ego trip.

these are thre guys who will look the same for years- then make a million excuses why we grow...oh, and usually say it is how they are suposed to do it-------

---i had a guy spent more time in the gym than everyone, evrery six months or so i would ask him about his 4 inch range of motion on EVERYTHING-and he would swear to me he read it from someone he truely respected and it was working. I tried for years to explain to him how a muscle will grow beTter when worked with a bigger rep range. He still continues to lift like that and his reward is aftyer all these years he still LOOKS THE SAME.
im not hardcore, im not cool, pretending any different would be acting the fool--- ill leave that to those who are good at it

Yesterday we had a guy doing that on the cable leg press machine - had it almost fully loaded up and I swear he was not even bending his knees 10 degree... after 10-15 really fast 'knee twitches' he put the weight down and strutted around a little... thats what I got my first real look at him: middle aged, overweight indian guy with toothpick arms and legs.
Next he headed over to the bicep curl machine and proceded to bust out a few sets of 20 degree ROM curls with half the stack.
I seriously wanted to go ask him if he had a reason for doing that or if he thought he was really getting a workout - but I didn't want to be one of those assholes that comes up to people while they are working out and tells them what to do. We have another guy there that does that - he was "correcting" a couple that was doing squats with perfect form the other day... then proceded to go back to doing shrugs with 55 pound dumbells with wrist straps so he can hold on to them.

I believe that some of these people we speak about have been placed in the gym for our personal entertainment! It sems to always come at a time when I could use a good laugh...They do not want to be told what to do or how to do it..I have one at my gym too...He loads up the leg press with max plates on both sides and in the middle and goes maybe 4 - 6 inches, then lets it slam when he locks it into place and makes a big loud noise....good grief!

            :iagree:

I'm with you on that one Heck. It's very hard to understand what some people are doing and thinking in the gym sometimes.

If someone is doing something freaky and I honestly think they are going to hurt themselves, now or eventually, I'll say something. Even then, though, it takes a lot of people skills to successfully do it.

Could you imagine, though, if everyone in the gym was working out correctly? All the equipment we like to use would have lines at them.

people at my gym do this all the time. The best one's are the half bencher. u know the guys who go have way down for there ROM. Then celebrate the they could bench 275 with no help. These guys r comical. Ask them what they can deadlift and/ or squat, since they can bench 275, adn u get o I don't do those they are bad for the knees.

My brother in law to be is one of these guys. He kept telling me how he is strong for a little guy and I was like whatever I dont care how strong you are. He insisted on working out with me last year so he came into the gym one day. I was not doing anything heavy on squats I think just 315 . Well anyway, we warm up and he then throws 405 on the bar. I started getting nervous at this point since he has about 18 inch thighs. He backs it out of the rack goes down about 3 inches and comes back. My dumb ass then tells him that is not even close to being low enough to get it down there. So he decided to take it lower. Well he gets about half the way down to the floor and just lets go of the bar and it flies off his back towards me. Thank god it did not hurt me because it would have been a bad scene if I had to kick his ass.... LOL... He then gets up and tells me that he had it but his hands were sweaty and the bar slipped,,,,,, LOL

I see this all the time in my university gym....Two man bench press(one pushes and one rows), curls on the preacher to forearms parallel at best instead of full extension down, loaded Squat/Smith with a 4-6" difference from legs being parallel let alone knee to hip on same horizontal line/plane parallel...

An acquaitance at the gym has good size and he ALWAYS ask for a spot on heavy weight...He will get one off barely and then attempt two to three more requiring me to lift it...Then he'll have the audacity to ask if I spotted him..Or on squats, he does have large legs, he loads it up and goes I'd say 3/4 down and will say
was that deep enough?" What do I say to those questions...Ill always try and white lie it...Like Ill say "I spotted some on those reps" or like "I like to go nice and deep on them" to which he replies "Deep equals injury..." so I reply "not if you control it down...."

When I first started DC training I was doing the killer set on squats and their was a guy next to us in an another squat rack doing bb curls...He sees us go Ass to grass and I hear him whisper "Yess!!!! I laugh about it today still...

People don't like others coming over to them to correct them. Especially if a (so-called-gym) Trainer taught them how to do things that way.

I will stand there staring at some with a grin on my face....trying so hard not to laugh. Others have me totally stummped.
I ask KR at times, "What are they doing?" There are times when he tells me that if that person has a certain type of injury, then they need to do the exercise this way or that.
So they may actually be doing what they need to.

For the obvious clowns, just get a good chuckle out of it.

Actually I love having these kind of people in the gym, it keeps things interesting. If they weren't there who would I laugh at?

I tried to help the guy above with his calf development..Told him to try DC style, explained how to do it, twice a week...Of course he modified it to 3 sets of 8-10 with 10 sec negative..Said it burns like a bitch
