Anyone know what the most respectible personal training certification is? A good friend at work is asking me because he wants to start training fat cats in his basement gym and a cert would make it easier for him to market himself.

ACSM when I was doing it but fuck that has been almost 10 years ago....I do not condone the use of anabolic steroids or any illegal drug, any information discussed is for educational purposes only.

ACSM is good, i am ACE certified and have been for 4 years, used to be top, now they are getting a bit comercial, but is still a tough test---they follow ACSM though in their manual- so ACSM strait to the sourceim not hardcore, im not cool, pretending any different would be acting the fool--- ill leave that to those who are good at it

NSCA certifications are probably some of the most respected - as in the CSCS and NSCA-CPT.
I don't know about the CPT test, but the CSCS test is a fairly difficult 2 part test - but not impossible.

ACSM and NSCA require undergraduate degrees in ex. sci. / a related discpline.
ACSM's Certifications are considered the most repectable. For pers. training the ACSM Health Fitness Instructor and the NSCA CPT are tops.
For strength and conditioning, certifications really don't mean shit to the guys who do that at a high level. However, NSCA's CSCS is not a bad cert. and probably the one I personally would like to see in a trainer (if hiring for a facility I run), as it has a more hard-core emphasis on training principles, and still allows for liability insurance.
The bottom line is that certifications don't really mean diddley in the big picture, except that they allow one to have liability insurance, which is a nice thing...However, all else being equal (big "if"), I'd take an ACSM or NSCA certified trainer over an ACE certified trainer every time.
