  • Sumo Deads?

Hey guys, my body just does not want to do Regular Deads or Rack Deads, it always kills my lower back no matter how low in weight I go.

My question is I used to Sumo Dead before DC training, and that one felt good, but I wasn't sure if it was as good for Back Thickness and traps like reguar deads are, because of the different mechanics of the lift. SO just wanted to see if any of you guys knew the answer. Thanks a lot.

BTW, Blast just started, can't wait! Gotta gear up and get huge for when In-Human comes and beats my ass (as he's been promising for months lol)

Sumos will still hit the erectors lats and traps, it just put your quads/glutes more into the bottom of the movement. Sumo style is for the non typical deadlifter body type..

I think I have the bad deadlifting body type, super long arms, super long torso, relatively short legs, always feels awkward and hurts my lower back and can't do the form no matter how hard I try, but I don't want to lose out on the thickness that deads bring, so I was hoping Sumo Deads are a viable option.

long arms are what you want for deads! thats why deadlifters usually dont make good benchers....short torso are great for deadlifters too

I have the longest torso ever, My body does not like regular deads, just doesn't work.

Would Sumo deads build the same amount of quality back mass and thickness like regular deads?

I've tried the rack deads and the rack pull deads, and they both just kill my lower back and I can't get into a good position, it's awful.

i have a similar body type as you, baby, and doing regular deads is a bitch.

Sumo deads let you start in a more upright position so it easier on your lower back and they are still an excellent back builder, I would say pretty close to regular deads. The problem with sumo deads versus regular or rack deads is they put a tremendous amount of strain on your groin and if this is a weak area for you you could potentially injure yourself or have to use a lighter weight until the area strengthens up. The stroke length of a sumo dead and a rack dead is pretty similar but you will have to use significantly less weight with the sumo dead so i would be more inclined to go with the rack deads over sumo or full.

                      baby,

how close is the bar to your legs when you start the pull during rack deads?

if you have a long torso and you try to pull a rack dead with the bar touching your legs you are putting your lower back in a weak position. move the bar forward an inch or two when you start and that should fix the problem.

Baby, you should invest in a trapbar. Awesome piece of equipment. I have a bad lower back and this movement never really bothered me. I also just started Rack DRAG Deads. I set the pins to about knee level and kept my back flat, almost arched and it was great. Here's a link to a great article on the trapbar:

                            Hope something helps!

WE have a trap bar at my gym, but I always though using it would work your quads and hams more than it would your back and traps like regular deads.

Would the trap bar dead work the back as well?
