  • I don't get it...

Not sure if any of you guys have ever watched WWE, but Maven Huffman, known as simply Maven, works out at my gym quite regularly (he's from the area). He's the guy to win the first Tough Enough competition etc etc....Well, anyway, he's recently put on a ton of size and, while not of IFBB proportions, is very large and ripped. Tonight, he was working chest. First, he goes over to the Smith and does low incline presses with, I kid you not, a 25 lb plate on each side super setted with 15 lb dumbell flyes. All of his workouts are done with very high-reps and extremely low weight. On shoulder day, he does seated militaries with a 25 lber on each side supersetted with side laterals and bent laterals, both done with 10 lb plates. For curls, I've never seen him use more than 20 lb dumbells. These aren't just "light" workouts either, he has confirmed this is how he always trains. I know Dillett and some others have had the genetics to train light (in relative terms) and still grow, but damn, my girlfriend rest-pauses DC style with more wieght than this guy touches (she can outlift 1/2 the guys in the gym now, she and I both thank you DC, LOL). I mean, with the greatest genetics and drugs in the world, how can someone be that large from these workouts?

On a side note, I have nothing against the guy, he is truly a definite class act. He's always respectful and willing to talk to anyone and is not in the least bit arrogant. I really look up to the guy, I just don't get how he could look like he does from that kind of workout...wow.

I don't get it, either. Good question! That's uhh...strange in the least. I've seen big guys train fairly light but not THAT light...

Its funny we have some older pros in our gym and they train very very light and go for a serious pump, and these guys are not small at all, they ain't huge but not small, there are a few that can make gains with low weight and high reps, many make great gains with high volume, genetics are a wonderful thing aren't they...

By the way, when he lifts does he actually look like he's working out? Does he go to failure? How many reps is he actually doing?

One thing I have noticed with guys that train light is they don't seem to have the same muscle density that heavy lifters do. You know that hard thick grainy look when it comes time to compete. Just an observation on my part!!

Another though I just had, I just watched jay cutlers video and he does not push anything around that I would consider that extreme for his size. For fucks sake I am lifting the same weights on a lot of stuff that he is and am not far behind him on a lot of them that he is heavier on and I am not even close to jay.

It has to be genes. You know those guys that could get big pushing a fucking lawn mower.

Absolutely bigp. In fact, I was talking about this the other day with someone on another board. Arnold mentioned it in his book, too. There is a certain 'look' that a very heavy lifter has. Take a look at Dorian. The guy looked like a piece of fucking granite, OK? What did he follow? Modified Heavy Duty. You know when you look like a damn rock that you've done some heavy training in your days...LOL

He's got a look on his face as if he's actually straining, but at those weights I know he can't possibly be. He's sole concern is with chasing the pump and doesn't come close to failure. I've counted his reps and they've ranged anywhere from around 15-25.

I think the difference in physiques come contest time is pretty much due to recruitment of different types/different numbers of muscle fibers during training. Maybe I am wrong. If I am, someone please correct me...

I hate to say it but I was watching Yates video and I thought the same thing, I thought he would pound the iron, but I guess not...

It is two things, heavy lifting and muscle maturity...
