My gym doesn't have a power rack so I tried doing rack deads on an angled smith machine (with angle toward me). Seemed to work my back ok. Any opinions?

No Squat Rack either, well I have seen some crazy things in the past like using two steel chairs with the plates sitting on each chair and I have seen some guy use metal milk crates.

I would just opt for Floor Deads...

I am not a fan of deadlifts on the smith machine.

There's a squat rack but it's one of those chair shaped pipe deals. We do have a platform w/bar rack I use for straight leg deads but I think it's taller than my knees but I'll double check.

Far as the Smythe goes for Back Thickness I would only do Bent Rows on it...

I use the smith machine since we dont have a cage. For the rack deads. Ive almost got the technique down to the point where its full on working. At first it was kinda weird cause the bar was a bit further away from me. but i stand on this step thing with my legs touching the bar.

                    beautiful.

Our smith machine is angled so I can pull the bar up against my body. Like I said earlier, it seemed to work ok mechanically, and I really felt it .

Theres like no knee movement in the motion. I stand on the step thing because im a bit short to let the bar reach my knees when im on the ground. Its all in the back. But your right. I should probably take it easy. Damnit!
