  • DC & Dumbells solved

Hey guys I thought I'd share my solution to RPing with dumbells -

I hang the dumbells from chains and stick a bench between them. They hang right down next to your shoulders so all you have to do is grab them and press - no farting around trying to get them up and ready each time.

I'm not sure how your gym would like you drilling holes through their racks and attaching chains though - I train at home so it doesn't matter!

I attached a pic, I hope it works.

    Thanks,
    Goggs

i was telling dante about this contraption that joe gold has at his main head quarters for world gym in marina del rey. it was hand made where it was a similar set up to your picture, but the dumbbells actually detach and the platforms that were holding the dbells move away from you to do your set. kind of ingenious.

speaking of joe gold, that is the craziest man i have ever met, great guy, but what a mouth on him. he was talking shit to lee priest one day, calling him butter ball. unreal, lol.

The dumbells in the pic are 90lbs, and you can see the pipes are bending just a tiny bit - I'm not sure how much weight the chains could take before they snapped, but I've had a 440lb barbell lying on those pipes before, and they bend but not too bad.

Maybe one day I'll let you know! (I can rep the 90s a few times, but no way could I RP them effectively) 140 is a long way off yet.

Me too, but its also judged relative to bodyweight. The 2002 winner weighed 152 and used the 135's for 10 reps. To match that, IH would have to find some 270's!!! (Granted the 2003 winner wasn't quite as impressive...)

You have a very good point, we only have 150s and I can Decline them 17 reps and Incline 14 Reps, but I am high 280s now (diet), so yes I am not that strong pound for pound.

Randy, The only problem I see with the Power Hooks idea is when you fail on that last positive and you are able to get the weight up to do the super slow negative then what?, you will not be able to re-hook the DBs, I know they are great to not have to "set" the first set by taking them off the rack sitting back and kicking them up, so the hooks would save a lot of energy from the start...

                      IH,

You could work in a power rack and set up 2 straight bars: 1 for hooking at the starting position (bar is racked normally), the other at the lower position w/ the bar on the safeties (or a second set of supports).

Obviously, you could just dump the weight, too, but that's not ideal for a variety of reasons... ;^)

If you have a spot, this would make it quite easy, as the spotter could grab the hooks when you let go of the DB's after your last negative...

JJ Marsh's company used to sell adjustable dumbell stands you could place the dumbells on and lift off and on again.

R-, Very good idea, when I am doing Declines and I have just one spotter he usually grabs my left DB after failure and I just set the right one on the ground, I do not want to break them I never throw DBs, when I do them Inclines I am in a better position to just set them back on my knees stand and re-rack.

Good idea though with the cage and the hooks...

I have found that power hooks aren't for super heavy past failure training.
                              My problems are:
Placing the weight on the bar initially which means lifting heavy dumbells Chest high and hooking them.
Also I find I can't RP with the Dumbells very effectively just like BB Presses..lifting off takes a lot of energy away as well as re racking.
I find with the powerhooks I am concentrating on saving enouigh energy to put them back up and that results in a subpar set-in DC terms. Since we get only 1 set I don't like to waste it. So when doing dumbells or free weights I won't rest pause at all I'll just go superheavy.
As with everything there are pluses and minuses.

Thank good ness for MRS Smith..errr Mr Smith of Smith Machine fame!
