  • Schmoove's Strongman Journal

As a former fledgling bodybuilder and a surprising weak powerlifter, I thought it was time I brought my mediocrity to the field of Strongman.

I'm training for my first Strongman contest on July 17th. The events include: log press, yoke squat, tire flip, pick-up truck deadlift, and atlas stones. Each event will be done for maximum weight with each lifter getting three attempts at each event. The best effort in each of the five events will be totaled with the highest total in each class winning (almost like a powerlifting meet).

So far, training for this strongman contest has been a lot of fun.

I might get an Olympic lifting meet in before I die

Also, if I can get around those silly gender restrictions, I may just enter a figure competition since I look good in a two piece and platform heals.

Gracias, amigo. Sorry, I should give credit where credit is due.

If you can impart any wisdom for flipping the 1000lb tire as well, that would be greatly appreciated. I can hardly budge it.

Welllll......... I think once you get your deadlift up to 800 for reps, it will feel a lot easier.

                      Kind of the 'indirect' approach.

All you need is a ton of attitude, attack the tire like you are trying to kill it.

I would try to get the tire off the ground in a squat position, and just use my legs and lean into the tire until it gets off the ground. Then just get your knee under it, brace yourself and switch your arms to a press position. Then it just turns into a bench type press while leaning into the weight.

I have only flipped a 600# tire, (600# for 24 flips, current PR) because that is what I have, but in July I will be flipping a 950 for 60 feet, and I'm not even worrying about it because I know that my technique will allow me to flip the tire without getting too tired.

Truck Deadlifts - Worked up to the truck plus an additional 125lbs for a rep.

                          Tire Flips - 600lbs for 3 sets of 3.

Atlas Stones - Worked up to a 280lb stone over a 50" bar. Should hopefully be able to get the 300lb by next month

Does it bother you when people say they don't read because they are "too busy"?
