  • deadlift: bleeding right under the kneecap

so everytime i deadlift i scrape up the part right at the bottom of my kneecap. now it bleeds and each week is a good chance of it getting worse. how do you guys deal with this? i don't want to keep ripping scabs open and making scar tissue more and more problematic.

not sure when this is happening, probably lowering the bar down

it only occurs on my left leg, where i underhand for over-under. not sure if it makes a diff

Do you dead lift in shorts or gym pants?

Sit back behind the bar more as you pull. If you let go of the bar during your pull you should fall over backwards. Sounds like you are pulling up more than back thus getting over the bar. You may need to set up a touch farther away from the bar as well. Lastly, put duct tape over the spot while training until it heals.

duct tape my shin? thought duct tape rips skin off too. ouch

set up ill check again. this didnt happen alst year, though last year was more bruising, this year is more scraping.

i cant keep my upper back up, and after watching the elitefts DL vid it is a problem i need to fix.

im sure i am tearing it on the way down, as evidenced of the angle of the skin flap (broken from the top and hanging from the bottom skin).

i am deadlifting in shorts: what pants are ideal? thick sweats, or thin glossy pants?

Pants just get in the way. I prefer just compression shorts honestly but usually wear normal gym shorts. Duct tape won't be comfortable but it will stop the tearing open of skin. Just put a little vaseline or bacitracin on the scab/cut so when you pull the tape off it doesn't pull that too. Regular skin should be fine.

I had a similar problem when I wore shorts. I think any pair of pants would be better than shorts. Try one and then another and see which if any solve your issue.

I wear a mountain climber pants on deads the material is non shredding I like them. I've seen guys wearing special long socks in the gym on deads that go over the knee but that's not my style lol

              Loose knee sleeves.

Special emphasis on 'loose'...too tight then it straightens out the leg too much and it'll turn the movement into a stiff-leg dead.

Read this again and realize you are having the issue on the way back to the floor and not during the pull. I think you may still need to be pulling back more. However it could be a low back weakness that you are compensating for by bending at the knees first and trying to squat the weight back to the floor.

A video would be good. Specifically from the side.

Agree with Adam on getting a video and looking into the possibility of your setup being the determining factor.

I didn't have bleeding, but I did have severe, sharp pain underneath my left kneecap (localized, no radiation, 8/10, not touching it made it better) every time it was touched.

It wasn't until I videotaped myself that I saw how I kept my ass high like a stripper begging for a dollar and not pulling my shoulders down and back. YMMV.

Need video. Starting too far away and pulling into your body can cause the same thing. Hard to say what is going on.

My shin has been bleeding for nearly 2 years now..lol

doesnt the scar/scab just get worse? i remmeber this first started 4-8wks ago and it was like hehehhee cute and now it is just like fuk...showering sucks.

vid makes sense. i haven't taped myself in a LONG time so im bound to have screwed up lots of form by now. however, might need to wait a little bit since i sprained my wrist that same day (didnt know until day after) and tweaked an elbow.

i think it was kroc rows with a slipping grip but refusal to let go which screwed up the wrist ligaments. hmph. hopefully heals in a wk since i cant do any pressing for sure

You should be scrapping your shins. If not, your too far off the bar. I bleed every session. I think its time to man up if you want to play. Like said, duct tape or wear knee high socks. If you really have to save your pretty shins, grab a 2 liter soda bottle and cut out 2 4x8 strips of plastic and slide it in your knee high socks on your shins. Bam problem fixed.
