            It is Scott M.

These were posted on MM a couple weeks ago. I believe he missed this attempt in comp. at this weight, but he made it in when this was taken (1 week out, I think).

            Friggin' amazing, man.

Yeah, it is amazing that these guys are benching what the WR in the squat was 15 years ago.

I know the shirts are responsible for a good bit og it....but that it still superhuman strength.

I would like to see Katz in his prime in this day and age with the shirts and other stuff.

I think katz benched around 660 in the early- mid eighties, but I could be mistaken.

Even with a shirt i don't see a 660 lb raw bench equallying the 1005 Mendelson is putting up

That is true....but you have to remember Katz' prime was in the late 70's and early-mid eighties.

I lot of things have changed since then. As an example there were no PW supplement drinks-well, there was Muscle-On (MLO) but you know, it wasn't the good stuff that is available today.

Take a look at the BBers of that era versus today. A huge difference. It is the same in Powerlifting. Chemical enhancement has come along way as has training techniques-safe to say everything is different.

Katz would be right with these guys at the half ton mark if he was in his prime today.

Actually, when I see him commentatingthe World's Strongest Man comps he still looks like he can put up some big weight-he has to be in his mid-late 50"s by now.

Who knows - Maybe he would and maybe he wouldn't. But i agree that his genetics are out of this world.

who cares, 660 or 1005, it's a lot of freakin' weight for a bench press regardless of which one a person can push.

This article points out some interesting things:

" As the record for the shirted bench press shot up to 965 pounds, the unshirted or "raw" mark has stayed at an earthly 713 pounds. (Scot Mendelson has that record.)"

"At one meet, Rychlak had to abandon an 890-pound lift because it wasn't heavy enough to force the weight down to his pecs."

Kaz benched 661, which was the world record for nearly 20 years. Give him today's technology and he's in the game, no doubt.
