  • Cysts in the knee

After a recent MRI on both knees they found cycts on the ACL of my left knee, as well as a good amount of fluid build up in my right.

Has anyone dealt with cysts and what should I expect? I go see the orthopedic specialist tomorrow, and honestly, am scared shitless.

Wow I've never heard of a cyst on the ACL. I haven't had any myself but I'm sure I got a few here or there because my dad and his dad had tons of those removed from them. Benign cyst but still. However, I have had 2 ACL surgeries so I know quite a bit about the knee and the ACL.

Depending on how the cyst is set in the knee/on the acl will determine the course of action.

They will put you under, stick a small camera into the knee and take a look because the MRI might not tell them everything. It's very non invasive and shouldn't take long at all to get in, take a look, make a plan and remove the cyst. From there your recovery begins the minute you can move the knee after you wake up. They used to immobilize the knee after surgery for a few weeks, sometimes months but now the protocol is to move as soon as possible to prevent atrophy.

Important muscles to focus your PT on will likely be the vastus medialus and hamstrings.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing how this goes.

The doc was great and went over my MRI's in depth with me. Below is the issues and ideas

Left knee- 1/2 cyst in the ACL. Liquid in form and not of great concern at this time, but will be checked up on periodically. Most likely the result of a minor blowout that tore a bit of the ACL. Can be surgically removed if I wanted but not needed at the moment.

Right knee- Ample fluid build up, muscles are oddly developed and minor arthritus as well. Physical therapy recommended to strengthen up lacking muscles.

Both knees need massive stretching as my muscles are extremely tight for my 'loose joints'. Physical therapy, orthotics for cardio and the gym are being ordered as well as knee braces to help in proper tracking of the knee cap.

All in all, not as bad as I antisipated.

This is good to hear! I have the brace for knee cap tracking. It's called a chopat and it makes my knee feel great.

They will be doing it for both I believe since the left is catching up in terms of looseness and pain levels.
