  • Becoming a Supple Leopard

http://www.suppleleopard.com/ Has anyone read this/own this book? I plan on picking it up soon. The title of it confuses the hell out of me....lol, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to be a Supple Leopard..ha.

It looks to be great for mobility issues, rehabbing/prehabing, etc...Something I for one need more of and pretty much everyone else, no matter what their given training is.

The author is also one of the founders of http://www.mobilitywod.com/. They used to have free vids and stuff, but now I think you need to pay.

Awesome. I sent my friend a FB message this am about it. He is a strength coach at Illinois State Univ. He has it and has read it. Has all his athletes do the shoulder mobility stuff.

I think they would probably sell more copies if the title made sense. I thought it was a new Kama Sutra move or whatever that sex book is called.

I work in a physio clinic and Kelly Starett (the author) has really shaped how I deal with injuries and certain conditions. I think it's the only book you need when it comes to injury rehab/prevention.

Great to hear. Makes me want it now. How do you feel about the products they sell? The specialty LAX balls, etc....worth it?

I have heard alot of positive feedback about the voodoo band, but havent actually tried it myself. We use LAX balls and heavy banding to put on a distraction force quite regularly, but those can be picked up for pretty cheap.

                    Breck-

I have followed Kelly for a while now and taking advice from some of his videos, I have solved several inhibiting mobility issues for my in my hips, knees, calves/ankles etc. His voodoo flossing technique works extremely wells for many areas lacking range of motion or having pain due to injury/tightness etc. I use a lacross ball and a rumble roller for rolling out knotted areas of fascia in my legs and glutes (piriformis area mainly) and back and works wonderful for recovery after intensive workouts.

Restrictions in mobility restrict the movement required for maximum muscle recruitment and movement required for roper lifting technique. It, in my opinion, is the underlying culprit in most people's bad form on movements such as squat and deadlifts (besides trying to lift too heavy). If you can't move right, you can't lift right, in my opinion. I know many physical therapists who all put Kelly's opinions and views in high regard.

I don't have the book, but whenever I have a movement or pain issue, I look up the body part on his site for a video that addresses it. He still has tons of free videos on there.

Lacross ball, voodoo flossing bands, rumble roller, and mobility bands are all great tools for mobility improvements, flexibility, recovery, and injury prevention. I use them all.

It's a great book. As others have mentioned it provides you with the tools to help diagnose any mobility issues and corrective exercises for them. The book and these methods are very helpful for treating and preventing injury.

BTW, the videos that were on the website before that were free are still currently available from the website for free. The only videos that are restricted are those labeled "Pro" (I think this label is on one of the corners of the thumbnails of the vids).

I can't remember the source but I believe he came up with the "supple leopard" thing when thinking of the idea that as athletes we should be able to jump into action at any moment - like a leopard. Your tissues should be sliding/gliding (supple) and not tacked down (basically laminating your tissues - think turning your ass into a grilled cheese sandwich from sitting all day). If you are making basic adaption errors (dehydration, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, sitting in your chair all day, etc.) and have bad movement mechanics your performance will suffer and you will increase the likeliness of injury.

Becoming a Supple Leopard basically takes all of Kelly's ideals, mobilizations, etc. from his free videos and puts them into one cohesive book which is nice if you don't feel like watching 400+ videos. One aspect of the book that I enjoyed was his ability to describe movement in a language that was easy for me to understand and apply it to different sports. Once you recognize the basic movement archetypes it will make identifying movement dysfunction and preventing injury much easier.

IMHO, some of the products he sells aren't needed (gemini, supernova). What do I have and use daily for mobilization/stretching? lacrosse ball (like $1 at any sporting goods store), double lacrosse ball (2 balls taped together), voodoo floss band, foam roller, barbell, a resistance band or 2. That's probably all you need to do all of his self-mobilization techniques.

Good luck on becoming a supple... bodybuilding warrior leopard.
