  • Lesson learned

So I'm sure you all hear it all the time but from time to time people try to tell me how back in their day they could lift so much or they were 2%bf etc. I have heard it so much I just normally listen then go do something different or change the subject.

The owner of the gym I go to has made some small talk and I knew he was well educated and had a masters in nutrition. He is a paraplegic and I had heard it came from a swimming related accident but I had no clue he had such an impressive lifting background. He never mentioned it in talking I just happened to see it while looking for something else on the gym website.

    1980 AAU Mr. North Carolina
    1976 AAU Mr. All South
1985 5th place Tall class AAU Mr America
1986 6th place Tall class AAU Mr Universe
    1978 Mr Appalachian
    1981 President Cup champion
    1982 Carolina Classic champion
    Powerlifting
1982 N.C. State powerlifting champion 242 lb. class
1984 N.C. State powerifting champ 275 lb. class
    Records
Four N.C. State deadlift records (best 770lbs.)
1983 deadlft of 770lbs ranked in the top ten deadlifts in the world
    Other accomplishments
Inducted into the North Carolina weightlifting Hall of Fame in 2000

Lesson learned is don't discount someone because of the way they look today. This guy is confined to a wheelchair due to an accident but he has walked the walk and has probably forgot more than guys like me know. His name is John Howie for any of you guys that have been in the game long enough to possibly know him.

That physique is damned impressive TODAY let alone in the 70s and 80s.

I would say he looks familiar but it is probably just because he resembles Ray Mentzer to me.

I think that's awesome. How did you see it go down? Do you think Haney deserved it over Makkawy?

Whoa, testing the 'ole memory banks now. What I remember is....Sergio Oliva was just awe inspiring. Haney was a deserving winner. The taller bodybuilders always look more impressive than the rest when they are standing together in a lineup, they have the advantage in that respect.

You might have seen him in a movie, actually, Ken:
