  • Calves= genetics

I am shooting from the hip here, but GENERALLY speaking IMO calves are more prone to genetic pre-disposition than other muscles. I know...I know...yes genetics overall are very important. But, I have seen some really HUGE bodybuilders with small calves EVEN THOUGH they work them hard. And I have seen some skinny guys with BIG calves that don't work them. This is true moreso than other bodyparts it seems. Here is an example I just saw at the World Baseball Classic. Cleveland Indians SHORTSTOP (not slugger) Mike Aviles is listed at 510-204lbs and he has bodybuilder quality calves. He says he is embarrased by them cuz they are so big. Says he NEVER EVER has trained them. Typically wears long pants to hide them cuz they are so disproportionate to the rest of his body (kind of gangly). He says everyone in his family has thick muscled legs. Here are some pics for proof. Amazing the power of genetics!'

I would have to agree that of all the bodyparts calves are the ones that it's almost a "you either have them or you don't" scenario. That guys calves are insane.

Chris Dickerson had awesome calves and his twin brother who was not involved in bodybuilding had calves that were just as good.

Is he really that much of a vagina, that he wears long pants for the sole purpose of covering his big calves?

I only learned of this guy's calves yesterday while watching the WBC. I know him cuz I am a baseball fan but did not know his calves were such a topic of discussion. He showed them during the interview and they were pro bodybuilder quality. But, since the rest of his body is more like a skinny Latin American middle infielder they don't fit his body. To avoid calf conversation he wears long pants as much as possible (per him during the interview).

I saw that same interview as well! I was on the treadmill watching and almost stopped to rewind to make sure I saw what I thought I saw.

I thought this was a good example of the genetics argument as well and what made his case unique was that those mountains weren't under a 300 lb. dude. Usually calves that big on somebody who never trained had to earn their size just in supporting a fat & untrained body.

Thats exactly what I thought. I wish I had the video...cuz the pic doesn't even do him justice. His calves were like Mr. O but otherwise he was a skinny dude. It was amazing. And to think he NEVER has trained them. WOW. I wish I had that "problem" with biceps, or chest, or lats, or traps, or dammmm just name it. HAHA
