  • Umbilical hernia and diastasis recti

Has anyone had an umbilical hernia and diastasis recti to go alone with it? I saw the doctor about the hernia but he also said I have diastasis. I do have a split and the "football" that pops out if I do a crunch. He said he could fix the hernia and I could be ok as long as I'm not too active. Since the muscle above the mesh for the hernia is split and weak the mess may not hold and it would most likely blow again. The doctor referred me to another surgeon who does hernia and diastasis repairs. I just made an appointment to see him. I've never had any surgery before and this is kind of scaring me. What I thought was going to be somewhat minor surgery and recovery is turning out to be more major with a long recovery period. So I was wondering if anyone has had diastasis surgery. I was told I could be in the hospital for 2-3 days or possibly up to a week. How long was the recovery period and how soon did you get back to the weights. Any restrictions as far as heavy lifting goes? I certainly won't rush anything but sure hope I can train hard again some day.

    Thanks,
    Max

    Max,

Long time lurker here, but when I saw your post I thought I should chime in. I've had the umbilical hernia as well as the diastasis recti. The hernia surgery was virtually painless, even during recovery. The surgeon suggested I NOT have the diastasis recti surgery since it hadn't blown out. He said he didn't see what it looked like until he was "in there" repairing the hernia.

For the hernia I was out of surgery at 10:30am and back to work by 1pm the same day. I think I started doing some light ab work after a week, and then slowly progressed over a two month period and was right back at it with the heavy stuff.

Please let us know what the next surgeon has to say. I know for me it is more of a cosmetic thing than it is functional, as I am still able to lift heavy without any problems just having the hernia repaired.

I had a umbilical hernia. It took me 6 months to get over the surgery. No issues since.
