  • Chasing the pump

Up until now I have only competed in powerlifting and strongman.
I have built up a lot of muscle from just powerlifting (I dont think you can deadlift 700lbs with a small back!)

But now I am looking to put on a lot more size.
I have started taking jack3d as well as similar pre workout sups. They are great for focus and energy, but I dont get a pump from any of them.

If I was to add extra ingredients to help with the "pump" (things like citrulline malatate, arginine variations, AAKG, Agmatine etc etc) would there be a transfer into muscle mass?
Do they help with long term gains, do they just help you get through a session?
Do I need to have a massive pump

Sorry if this sounds ignorant, but they only info I have seen is from 165lb bb dot com kids

Supposedly, there are other compounds, such as l-citrulline that cause more of an increase in arginine in the body than arginine itself. That being said I used a product that had about 7 grams of various forms of Arginine and had great results, but this product also contained L-citrulline. I don't know if the pump itself helps, but I know that this particular product was pretty incredible. It also contained a couple other compounds that supposedly work together to maximize the pump. This product also had high levels of HMB. I took it with Beta Alanine and Creatine as well.

Whenever I can afford it I get some of my best gains, but I can't say it's one ingredient alone. I know it's not just the creatine, because I never had gains like that while just taking Creatine, so it may be everything working together. It also could just be the psychological benefit of feeling pumped. I know when I feel that way I'm more focused and tend to have better training sessions. I hope that helps a bit. Unfortunately, I don't know if delving into the science on this one would answer your question either so maybe some other will chime in on their experience.

No question is dumb or ignorant if you honestly want an answer and want to know.

Pumps might feel good and make you look better since your muscles get pumped up, and theoretically they might help with blood flow and nutrient flow, but in real life there's essentially zero correlation between a pump and muscle growth.

I can get a massive pump in my biceps by curling 5# dumbbells for about a hundred reps, but it wouldn't do a damn thing to aid growth. Getting bigger is about eating and lifting progressively heavier weights.

Now taking supps to help get a pump (like arginine, citrulline, etc) WILL make you have harder erections.

Yup, its mental for me. If I'm all pumped up halfway through my workout from my workout water, then I get a rush of motivation that I feel carries over to my performance

In my opinion 4.5 grams of glyco-carn about 30 min pre workout produce the best pump money can buy, and has a host of other benefits as well.

If you can get a script for it viagra destroys all other supps when it cones to getting a pump. Yea, in more ways than one.

Thats what I am asking about.
Do I need to chase the pump, or is it not worth anything?

There's various theories on this. Obviously increased blood flow to the muscle can stretch sarcomeres and prepare fascia for increased hypertrophy. What does that mean for long term growth ? Different for different people.

I definitely experience a pump in my arms and chest. I can see increased blood flow and size in my shoulders and legs but I don't feel it like I do in my arms and chest. That doesn't mean they aren't growing.

I also use augment pre and during my workouts an can tell a big difference when I don't use it.

Sammich already answered your question. The pump has nothing to do with gaining muscle. You will get pumped anytime you workout, given your carb intake is adequate and you are well hydrated. Think about it. Did you notice alot of guys getting huge while using all the NO boosters years back? No, because all they did was get more blood and fluid into the muscle, they had little effect on growth if any. Don't worry so much about the pump, just worry about progressing with your bb'ing type workouts and pushing your food intake to get larger. You will undoubtedly get some type of pump anyway, even though you don't necessarily need to look for it......
