  • recording work outs or sets....who does and why?

This thread is kinda an off shoot of a different thread...got me wondering who else records, why and what has been the result?

    On myself....

I record myself often, don't post them all but post a bunch on YouTube. Do I do it for ego? Probably sometimes in the ones I post but I record them mostly to check form. I have been both pleased and dissapointed by the results...examples would be a video I did when I was using 455 for bent rows....I cut the set short after 2 reps cause I thought my form was off...after watching it I was surprised by my form, it was far better than I expected. Another time I was doing hammer or Pinwheel curls and thought the set was good...watched the video and could not believe the amount of swing I was using.
When I first started recording any videos I was always more aware of my form, though I have been somewhat of a form nut for a LONG time, and I believe that has lead to better habits, more controlled rep speed, better posture, etc...

When I am in the gym I see people train and I just wanna tape them and then ask them "bro so you realise THIS is how you were doing your set?"... I never do that but OMT do I want to.

When I work with people I record them often, I would never post a video or even save one without the persons permission, and show them the vids....seeing where their form or rep speed may be off is so helpful...much more so than either explaining or.demonstrating.

So.... Who records either themselves or their clients and how helpful have you found it? Do you post the vids up on YouTube or do you just keep them private?

    BTW
Biggest reason for the thread is to encourage the average gym rat to record themselves, to not be embarrassed when they record themselves....to use the recordings to better their training. To honestly review what you see ....example is say you think you improved a lot in your squats.... You taped it when you got 315 for 10 and just taped yourself doing 365 for 9 but you watch the tape and you are going 3-4 inches shorter in depth, your negative rep speed is faster, etc... Watch it and be honest and ask yourself DID you REALLY get stronger? You don't have to be "showing off" to record yourself, you don't have to be moving huge wts to record yourself...you just have to have a desire to train safely and effectively. I admit that I say this as someone that DOES believe there is correct and incorrect form. I believe there IS a eight and a wrong way to do an ex.

    So anyway again...
    Who? why? and results?

    Peace

I usually don't because my gym is crowded and I train alone...
I have in the past to get critiques on form or to demonstrate something.
I have recorded others doing ridiculous things - but that's just because I'm a prick.

I don't usually, although I should, but once my meet gets closer I start to record to check depth and form. I'd like too more often but more often than not I'm rushing out to the gym thanks to Life being crazy busy

I record complex movements from time to time for form check/critique. Technically, my gym doesn't allow cameras, and there's usually some trainer walking around, but it is definitely a good idea. When I first started working out, I used to really focus on form, really try to go slow/controlled until I got the "feel" of how correct form should be, so now I'd like to think I can tell if my form is slipping and if it is something I should correct (squat, DL, BO Row) or something I can allow a little leeway with for overload (BB Curl etc)...

But still, I see where this could really help, wish I did more of this

I used to record sets at my old gym for form checks, but cant really do it at my university gym without some guy either:

          a. walking away nonchalantly with it
          b. giving it to lost and found
          c. knocking it over

It's always funny how much easier sets look on video vs how they feel...
PM me to discuss website/video/dvd etc. related work.

Except when people TRY to make them look hard...lol... My facial expressions don't change much, if I am on a machine I will often close my eyes when a set is the hardest and have a fully calm face on, I never yell or moan, often have a blank look on just about everything but deads or squats (then sometimes my head will look like its gonna pop).... The most emotion I usually show is a cpl deep quick breaths before my last rep or two. I grew up training at a truly hard core gym and this was common....in recent years I have trained at chains and the opposite is more common. At strong and shapely dudes would be benching 5 for reps, squating 7 for reps and almost never a peep....at the gyms I've been at recently its kids yelling with 225 on their backs or benching 185 for 6 inches and moaning.

We should have a "bad set of the month" contest and see who can get tape of the worst set they see at their gym.

I obviously record a ton. I have tons of videos from over the past few years...it's helped immensely. ESPECIALLY on things like pulls, squats, etc.

I never record my self unless something is really an issue. I hate watching videos of me lifting weights that I know I will smash a few months down the road. I guess it is to protect my ego that I do NOT film things lol.

I have sent videos to people whose opinion I value of my squat and deadlift in the past when I am having extreme issues. That is about it.

I feel my #1 weakness is my lack of recording things for opinions. I think it would save me a lot of guess work.

I should probably start recording more. I just really have a mental block putting things on the internet that I know I could do better.

for example. I want a 42inch standing verticle for a year now. I started with a 30, I am now at about 38, and have not filmed one video of my quest, and probably won't until I hit 42 lol.

the mental barrier sucks, how do you all overcome it?

Don't do it often due to training alone, but the times I have done it I found it very helpful.

It's also kinda of cool because it can serve as a video log book in a way. Seeing where you were and the progress you have made over time can be a great motivating tool to keep on plugging away and getting better.
