  • magnesium improves insulin sensitivity

I read an article in USA-TODAY about 3 weeks ago where researchers have found that people that consume3-5 cups of coffee per day have a 50-60 % less likely chance of developing diabetes. The key seems to be the magnesium that is found in coffee. Supposedly magnesium improves insulin sensitivity.
I also got this info the same night from the American Diabetes Assoc. in their Ezine.
Of course insulin is a pretty hot topic in the BBing world....you may want to consider adding some supplemental magnesium to your diet, or drink some coffee to improve your insulin sensitivity. And if you have diabetes, or have a family history of diabetes, it may be prudent to supplement with magnesium.
Considering coffee, Dr. William Campbell Douglass, MD, has stated several times in his newsletter that 1 cup of coffee has the antioxidant power of 3 oranges.

    Hey RJ,
The study was actually done on coffee drinkers, and the researchers believe (but evidently were not absolutely sure) that it was the magnesium content in the coffee that accounted for the better insulin sensitivity in these people. Diabetes is largely an insulin resistance problem.

Not all diabetics use drugs.....most are type 2 diabetics, which is actually about 90% of the diabetic population. This is caused by dietary and lifestyle habits that are pretty pathetic. In most cases these type 2 diabetics can reverse their diabetic situation by excercising, losing weight, and eating a healthy diet.

As far as adding another drug to the problem, I suppose you are talking about caffiene in coffee. I am sure that a person could use decaff coffee, but the reports I read on the study did not indicate what type of coffee was consumed.
Coffee may not be as "bad" as once believed. many food myths are being disproven. Everyone used to say eggs were bad, butter was bad, milk was bad, etc..

SS...were there any studies done (in comparison or along with these) that showed an increase in insulin sensitivity with those that just supplemented with magnesium or was it strictly based on the coffee? Just wondering...

After re-reading my question, I hope it makes sense

**Edit** I think I found my answer:

The link between diabetes mellitus and magnesium deficiency is well known. A growing body of evidence suggests that magnesium plays a pivotal role in reducing cardiovascular risks and may be involved in the pathogenesis of diabetes itself. While the benefits of oral magnesium supplementation on glycemic control have yet to be demonstrated in patients, magnesium supplementation has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity. Based on current knowledge, clinicians have good reason to believe that magnesium repletion may play a role in delaying type 2 diabetes onset and potentially in warding off its devastating complications -- cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, and nephropathy.

Just be aware if you experiment with magnesium - for anything.

I was taking alot of it to prevent cramps. It gave me the shits like you wouldn't believe - no stomach cramps just runs. This was on a fairly high dosage.

Thanks for posting the link Slide.....

The study I read about only pertained to coffee drinkers, but obviously supplemental Mg is beneficial.

Just don't overdo it, as X has described the results.

The MD's I go to for IV treatments usually put Mg in the drip bag so there is no gastric concerns.

Lets not forget one of the most important factors for taking magnesium...Without it, your muscles can't relax..and without calcium your muscles can't contract..So you should take it in a 2 to 1 ratio...or 1200 mg calcium and 600 mg magnesium..

I'm not disagreeing with you heckman. But there's been a lot info I've been reading lately that talks about once canelling out the effects of the other when taken at the same time.

Hey excelbeyond, not to worry. I've read the same thing before. But I've also read what it is my post mentions...There maybe no right or wrong here, its just what is it that works for us individually..I think our medical community maybe a little confused on this issue as well. A well known Doc friend of mine preaches this exact ratio to his patients as well..with great results...
And yes, staight magnesium will go right through you as fast as it goes in..so be careful..
