  • Dennis James Arrested

It is with sadness that I bring you the news that Dennis James, a great bodybuilder and a really nice guy on the personal level, has been taken into custody by the DEA and Thai police yesterday morning, 26th February, 2004, for allegedly being involved in a circle of ketamine and extasy trafficking from Germany. I did not post this yesterday as I wanted to check it out but it is apparently true. I hope that things turn out well for Dennis because he is in danger of being extradited to the US to face these charges there, and this can have very serious consequences. If I may be allowed to comment on this - and I mean nothing personal to Dennis here because I still don't know the full extent of his circumstances - this just shows again how recreational drugs are a definite no no. Steriods raise a red flag with the Feds, but if they see recreational drugs, they are going to come with you with everything they got and they have enough firepower and long enough hands to be able to reach out pretty much everywhere.

I hope his family is able to cope well with this huge problem that has blown up in their faces and I hope Dennis comes out of this fast and safe. His star was just rising and it would be tragic to see it being shot down at this point.

Rec drugs bring down yet another bro......what a shame.

The appeal of easy money and good times is too much for some...

If you (the reader) are using rec drugs just STOP.

If your friends are using rec drugs......find some new friends. I did.

If you are dealing rec drugs.....prepare to lose your freedom.

        Pretty simple.

It's bad enough that Dennis might (even though the facts seem irrefutable and the DEA would never stretch it's arm into Thailand unless they were 99.9% sure of a convinction based on powerful evidence, I am still hoping that somehow DJ will come out of this) have been involved with this circle. However, what's even worse is that this will ricochet all over the bodybuilding world and make bodybuilders look even worse criminals than they already do in the eyes of the general public. Finger pointing against our sport is indiscriminate and this will just add more fuel to the flames.
My best wishes still go out to DJ and his family in these problematic time in their lives.

IM^ ~ not to hijack the Thread, but it appears that the Bodybuilding community has gotten some relief from the media. Now, they're really coming down hard on popular team sports ie baseball ~ even going as far as accussing Babe Ruth (jeesh) ~

So sorry to hear about Dennis. I do know a couple of pro's that were busted. One, in particular (very well) ~ he got about five years; the other two, but served a year.

I guess all ya can do is wait. Unfortunately, that's the hardest part is "not knowing"...very scarey indeed.

This was just posted on Mayhem from a newspaper article over in Thailand. Does't look good at all. I wish him the best. "On 26th February at 9.00am, Dr. Mahaisak (chief of police), and Mr Yakvarachai (drugs officer) along with a DEA officer, arrested Mr Dennis James, the American champion body builder.
They found hundreds of vials of an anabolic steroid along with 19 E tablets in a parcel sent from Germany to Mr Dennis James at Universe Gym. Mr James admitted that everything in the parecl belonged to him and that he intended to sell the steroids to bodybuilding friends in Thailand, and the ecstasy tablets to tourists visiting Thailand. Police officers were called upon to search his house. Mr James's house was full of bodybuilding trophies. Officers searched Mr James's computer and found evidence showing that he used it to give and receive orders from all around the world. Mr James is charged with holding Ecstasy tablets without authorisation. The maximum penalty for this crime in Thailand is death.
Thai officers and DEA officers have been watching Dennie James for a long time. He has a business visa to be in Thailand to operate the Universe Gym but officials believe that this was a cover for his main activity - a major agent to import and export steroids which are banned in the United States. It is believed that he receives parcels from the Netherlands via Germany and he then distributes them to other countries, including America. Evidence was found showing that Mr James sells ecstasy tablets via the internet internationally. Police also found parcels in his home ready to be sent to an american address."

The public is very fickle Cat. Remember the Roman spectators cheering and screaming in the arena while the Christians were fed to the lions? All they wanted was blood, blood and more blood - from wherever it came. Bodybuilding is not being relieved from the bloodlust of the common rabble, it is just being given a temporary respite. The picture that politicians and their ruthless ally, the media, have painted of bodybuilding and bodybuilders will never go away. Soon enough, the finger will pointed in our direction again and the screams from blood will be directed at our community with even more rabid fervor. We are not only the brunt of the people's covetousness for a victim; we also suffer under the hypocrisy of the organizations involved in comandeering the sporting world.

I was hoping the details Cookie-Head just gave weren't going to become public but as I feared, the DEA have him nailed squarely to a tree. And yes, it's true that the penalty for those offences in Thailand is death. However, there are still a lot of things that need to happen before such a thing is even considered. In which case, extradition to the US to face charges would be a blessing for DJ.

Let's hope that things turn out in the best possible way now.

Oh jeez, that's terrible news. It sounds like the media is making him out to be some kingpin when I am sure he wasn't. But when you've been in the game that long, people become desensitized to paranoia and start getting sloppy. That's how Victor Martinez got busted, apparently.

I read about Dennis getting married a few years back and he was just becoming a top dog in BBing, now this. Damn. I hope things really aren't like "Broke Down Palace" in Thailand. They don't tolerate drugs period and the sentencing is ridiculously harsh. Hopefully, he'll be tried in the US and they'll consider the good he has done in his life.

Well, I don't know what the standing agreement between Thailand and the US is regarding extradition, but you can count on it, no matter what it is, it's going to cost A LOT of money ~
