Hey guys, I've been a member on this board for over a month and don't post much. I have a question for all of you. I take flax seed oil daily. I am an RN. I was talking to one of the guys at work today and he told me that studies have shown that flax seed oil can increase the chances of prostate cancer in men. He takes only fish oil. I have never heard of this, but wondered if any one else had. I am going to do some research on the web for an answer. Thanks ahead of time for the replies.

I would be very surprised if you found any info at all about the negative health benefits of flax oil. It doesn't sound right to me.

when i get the time, i will show you guys a slew of studies and writings that show exactly what moose is talking about. and whey flax and other unsaturated fats that the medical industry have been pushing may be more toxic then you think. alot of people do not realize the problems with oils going rancid and oxidation process within the body, this can cause more harm then good.

Ditto that! Are we talking overkill on the flax or using it in moderation. I would like to see who did the studies and what amounts they are talking about..I've heard the red meat thing too, but who eats a cow a day

I am aware of the possiblities of rancidity (word?) and oxidation but I thought he was refering more to the oil and it's properties than if it were bad or something similar. I do know that polyunsaturated fats have been shown to cause cancer in lab animals in several studies over the years but it is still pushed as a healthy fat, too. I have yet to see anything about monounsaturated fats at all, that has been negative.

I have always prefered and recommended fish oil over flax oil, anyway, as it has a better profile but this has been argued so many times that I hate to even say it. lol

skip, you have hit the nail right on the head with this statement. flax seems to be pushed so much more than fish oil, but you are right fish oil far surpasses flax in beneficial properties (EPA, DHA, etc.), even if the flax oil is "fresh", which most flaxes are not, even if they are refridgerated, in a black bottle and with an experation date.

many unsaturated fats are extremely volatile, which people do not realize. for instance CLA, this acid goes rancid if it is exposed to oxygen (air) after 10 minutes of exposure. and once the oil goes rancid, more harm happens within the body with all the oxidation that occurs. another reason to stay clear of powdered CLA or bottled CLA.

                  more to come...

Well guys, I talked to the guy at work today. He told me he read about the flax seed oil at drmirikin.com. I guess this doctor researches articles and abstracts them online. I went to the site, but could not find anything negative about flax seed oil. Ironically the most recent articles push flax seed. Very confusing. I have used fish oil before. It wasn't too bad. But every once and awhile I get a dose that I burp up and it doesn't taste too good. Does anyone have suggestions for brands to use? Thanks for all of the replies.
