as long as it is fresh and cold when purchased you should be alright. if it goes rancid though stay far away. it will make you sicker than hell.
personally i am very sensitive to flax, for me if i go over 1 tbl spoon of flax in one sitting. i get sick as hell, headaches, and stomach ache.

well not necessarily, just because it is on the shelf, un-refrigerated, does not mean it is rancid or bad. it is just you don't know how long it has been sitting on the shelf. if it is on the shelf, ask somebody how long it has been sitting there. if it is a couple of weeks you should be alright, but a couple of months i would take my business elsewhere.
always make sure your flax is in a dark colored bottle, preferably black (UV quickens the expiration of the product) and as well make sure the oil was extracted without chemicals. some companies use solvents to extract the oil from the seed. make sure it is expeller pressed or naturally derived.
