  • Junk Food Banned in Schools

Today it was annouced that all Junk food will be banned from all Elementray schools in the Great Toronto Area.

I am curious what all IM members have to say about this since the whole SuperSize me topic. I for one support it as a next step to improving childrens health and fighting the obesity problem. It doesn't solve it, but at least you can send your kids to school with a healthy lunch and there not gonna go buy chips and pop instead, and toss the lunch.

When I was in high school, they sold Krispy Kreme donuts almost every morning and chocolate chip cookies everyday during lunch and there was no limit on either one. I saw people buying a dozen or cookies instead of lunch; it was ridiculous!!!!

I say ban all junk food and coke products in schools.

i think that the school systems should def clean shit up ALOT
i realize its not cost effective tho, i mean a bag of cheese popcorn u buy in the grocery for .25c is 75c there, so they make serious money on it
i think the whole milk should also be done away with, as well as sodas in schools
          frk
          :iagree:
i always agree with what i say

I think its a great idea! If kids want to eat that crap, let mom and dad feed it to them...

In the state of Texas they passed a law a couple of years ago banning food with no nutritional value in public schools. Kids are not allowed to bring candy or cupcakes for school parties either. If the school is caught giving the kids anything not on their approved list they will lose their funding from the state. Kids can bring whatever they want in their own lunches, but they can't share their goodies.

The schools are also not deep frying anything anymore. Everything is baked now. I like the new guidelines... a little strict, but we should all have good eating habits. My kids hate it. bwaaaaaaahahahahahahaha!!!

shit they're going on a banning spree in Toronto eh.

Sushi places not allowed to use fresh fish anymore and banning dogs of the bull types....

but this is the only one that makes any sense.

                    Banning sushi?? Fuck THAT!

I fight with the school about the nutrition or lack of all of the time and get nowhere. It is sad.

My oldest son goes to a DoD school. At the beginning of the year it was costing me a $1.60 per day for him to eat. Everyday he would come home from school starving, not for a piece of fruit or something small, he wanted a full meal. I finally went to my neighbor who works in the school cafeteria and asked her about it. She said they are not served enough food to fill them up, she also says that it is not healthy. That irritates me that I pay a fortune for nothing. I mean bottled water is abundant, but at lunch he gets whole chocolate milk, to get water he drinks it out of a fountain. I just decided screw them all. I send him his own lunch now. A turkey or lean ham sandwich on wheat, applesause or fruit, he does get chips(sunchips) and water!

You know when I was growing up everything we got for lunch was friend in some way. Then when we got to HS we were allowed to leave for lunch. Give a child free reign on what to eat...believe me it was never healthy.

I wish we had known then what we know now. Hopefully I can help my kids make it through without dealing with weight issues.
