Originally posted by HeckmanHey IH...you were closer to that quake than I was, did you feel any rumbling??
GnB, Why does everyone think that shakers are so bad, lets look at the destruction of Hurricanes, my god the worst natural disaster there is, the most costly in damages and deaths to the US each year for weather realted deaths, so far in Florida this year the damages of just 4 Hurricanes 25 billion and climbing, lets see if you go back and look at all the shakers we have had here in CA since Sylmar Quake in the 80s we are looking at maybe 150 dead and 15 billion in damages, in over 20 years, hell the fires we have here have surpased the damages that shakers have caused. We had this year over 165,000 acres burn and lost over 950 homes with a cost of homes, state, county and city expenditures now at 13 billion this year alone.
I grew up in the Midwest, Michigan and Tornandoes are far worse than Quakes could ever be...

You know when a hurricane is coming. An earthquake always seems to hit you by surprise. I'd much rather have a hurricane.
Glad ya'll are all ok!!!

GnB, Remember that we have anywhere from 30-150 Quakes a month here in CA and 98% are not bigger than 1.5 on the scale, that won't even put a wave in your coffee, I just looked at our Ricther scale this morning, we have had 168 aftershocks from this Quake yesterday and the biggest was 5.1 and the Quake was 6.1 itself, no damage, no deaths just rattled nerves, so far this month we have had 211 quakes, felt one for 22 seconds...

Here in Ontario about 2 years ago we had our first ever in histroy earthquake, and I was in the basement at the time. I was on the computer and everything started to shake, it was very minor, and no big deal, but for myself I thought it was pretty cool, since I had never felt the ground under me shake.
Now the only worry we have here is that after this earthquake the goverment realized that our nuclear power plant actually sits on a fault line, and I live about a 10min walk from the power plant that sits just on lake ontario.Official Web Designer of Intensemuscle.com :peace:

Excellent points, IH, but what I'm not used to scares me. Tornadoes I don't like because I've never experienced one and there's not much warning if any at all and they can destroy so much. Earthquakes, again no experience and no warning though you did manage to take away some of their mystique. Fires, we don't get here much (can't remember one ever). Hurricanes and flooding. There's plenty of warning and I've been through them enough to know they're livable. Buy your flood insurance. Stock up on non-perishables, water and batteries for the flashlights and you're set. I might feel differently if I lived in Florida or someplace on the East coast that gets them lots, but we're not too bad here in Houston."The problem is not that there are problems. The problem is expecting otherwise and thinking that having problems is a problem." -
