  • Remembering people's names

Do any of you have any tips or tricks that have helped you to remember people's names after you first meet them? (Such as when networking for business)

I recall reading somewhere the suggestion to make a rhyme out of it or associate it with a physical feature or character trait of the person to trigger recall. I'm still not good at it. I'm working on being more outgoing and socially talented. Thanks for any ideas.

I will repeat the person's name when I meet them for the first time back to them.

I'm going to watch this thread. I'm awful at remembering names.

For me, the whole "repeat the person's name" doesn't do a thing.

Thanks, LG1. I've tried repeating the name (like machine gun fire) in my head after meeting, and not only does it not work, but I miss out on what they are telling me. I'll try repeating their name aloud to them in the course of conversation next time.

I'm going to have to start watching more football. Too bad the season is done for most of us. That is a good idea though - to associate them with another person of the same name.

I would think the tip on saying the person's name to them right after they introduce themselves would be helpful because they can correct you immediately, or you could say "Am I pronouncing that correctly?" Seems smooth to me.

I use a notes app on my phone and write the names of new people I meet into my phone.

I'm friggin' HORRIBLE at remembering names but am just using the name game as a great way to start up a conversation or keep on rolling. I've collected a half dozen biz cards, too. I say the person's name right back to them, ask if I'm saying it right, and then say I'm horrible with names. (Most people say the same back to me, but not all - only the honest ones... LOL Just kidding.)

Then, i will typically say out loud whatever mnemonic I plan to use, to keep the conversation going. (I hope that the whatever I'm using to remember their name isn't vulgar or crude.)

in the past week, I've met:

                        Neighbors:
                        Brandon
                        Bernard
                        Danny
                        Ralph
                        Robin
Erm (short for Erman, which I had to comment on was likely short for the German Ehrmann - a man of honor).

I met Joe and Johnny at the gym (as well as Matt, who does the web page) and will ask for Ryan or Joe tomorrow when I go in.

At the other gym, Leo (yes, the Lion) has got me hooked up with a month to month if I want.

Jerry is the owner at the other powerhouse. I actually didn't get the name of the guy working the desk (although I've figured out where some good acupuncturist are for him) as he didn't give me his name when I introduced myself. I did however talk to Jim (from Texas), who I noted has the same name as good childhood friend of mine. He noted that he has a Son named Scott.

My landlords are Jeff and George... (George's company G and G does not refer to Geoff, so Jeff's name is indeed spelled with a J.)

                        -----------

AND - I just used this thread to give myself another repetition at all these names...

Here's what I've been doing for years. Works great. When a person introduces themselves immediately picture their name written in black marker across their forehead. This creates a visual memory and gives you something to reference if you forget their name. The trick is to remember to this when you meet new people.

I figure I can just blame it on getting old. Other than stripper names, I'm good with those.
