  • Packaged Fish from China

The wife recently saw an article regarding the deplorable conditions at most of the fish farms in China. So I did a search trying to find where I could purchase some Salomon or Tilapia that was raised and packaged within the US and wasn't able to find anything. Also, I've been wanting to try some Orange Ruffy (Spelling) but unable to find any frozen. Anyone know where I can get either? I would hate to have to go back to canned tuna!!

Do you live near a city? Just go to a fish market and pack your freezer.

I agree with you V. A lot of frozen fish/seafood products are imported from Asia. I have encountered the same issue as you with frozen shrimp. Most come from farm in Thailand and are considered one of the most contaminated food products on the market.

In El Paso TX so the only body of water we have is in the pools or the toilet. Most of the so called fresh fish around here was previous frozen. See no need in paying for something labeled as fresh when you in fact it wasn't.

V1, look for "sustainable fish" or a certification form the Marine Stewardship Council (www.msc.org).

Whole foods and Trader Joe's have sustainably caught fish. If you can catch a sale, they are pretty reasonably priced. You may also want to look for "pole caught" canned tuna. I buy the Wild Planet brand which has higher omega 3 content and doesn't have that dry ass canned tuna taste. http://www.wildplanetfoods.com/

This is good link to check for sustainably caught fish: http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/seafoodwatch.aspx

As LG1 noted, shrimp from Thailand are horrible. I've heard foodies say that imported shrimp are basically the shit they don't want to eat in their own country. I did a few sushi rolling classes and got some fish info out of it.
