  • Polyamory

Curious as to whether anyone has ever been in a polyamorous relationship?

For example you are emotionally involved with a girl who is also emotionally involved with another guy at the same time.

I disagree with it. I agree with the "starvation economy" argument against polyamory which posits that when one's love is divided among multiple partners, the love is lessened.

However, those on the other side disagree with this argument against Polyamory because it treats love as a scarce commodity (like food or other resources) that can be given to one person only by taking it away from another. They would use an example of a parent with 2 kids, just cause you have 2 kids doesn't mean you love any one of them less than the other.

To which I say that they're still wrong because a parent with two kids can only give each kid 50% of the time/attention/love that would have been possible if there was only one kid.

I don't know if I am close minded/selfish or what. What're your thoughts? Has anyone ever successfully been in such a relationship?

I know two people that were in a poly relationship.

One couple split because the woman fell in love with an outside partner and wanted to only date that person. I think they were married for about 5-6 years and were actively poly for a couple of years, at least.

The other split because the husband decided to quit his job to become a hippy and the wife was not ok with him blowing through their retirement. I think they were poly early on in their relationship but not "actively poly" for the majority of their 25 year marriage.

Who has the time/patience to love 2 wimmenz????

Keeping 1 happy is hard enough.

Interestingly, the research doesn't indicate that polyamorous relationships have a higher failure rate than monogamous relationships, which is contrary to common perception of polyamory as being a ticking time bomb.

That's what I'm saying...you can argue all day about whether love is a commodity that is divisible (which implies that loving 2 people necessarily diminishes the degree to which one can love either)

But what you CAN'T argue against is that time is a divisible commodity. You have a finite amount of time on this planet and there is no way to get around that fact.

                LOL

Oh God. I better stay out of this one. The above statement could only come from someone who is not a parent.

                  I must've missed that one.

Yes, with 6 kids, I only love each of them with 16% of my total child love capacity.

I love several women; I love happy wife, cranky wife, playful wife, angry wife and especially dressed up wife......

I have only one wife and that is a lot to love.

The fact that she changes means I am able to fall in love with her over and over again. (yes she is sitting right behind me)
