  • Question about militarys on the smythe rack

When you do militaries on the smithe rack, how far do you normally bring the bar down ....nose...chin...upper chest? or arms parallel to the deck?

Good question, I think it depends on the comfort of your shoulders, for me I don't like to go any lower then chin level, I find right to the chest level is too hard on my joints.

I also noticed less stress on the joints going only nose or chin deep...

Heck, Stay square like a box with your Forearms and upper arms when at the bottom and bring the bar down to your chin, no farther...

IH, Would that type of form also stand true when doing inclines on the smythe rack as well?

Depending on if you have some shoulder problems, we like to go wide 6-8" wider than shoulders, but as I said some Rotator problems might not let some allow to do that, me for instance, I must go shoulder width, but the wider the better it will enhance your pecs especially the outer edges.

So in this case the square like a box will not work for your Forearms and upper arms...

I go all the way to the chest. I've had shoulder surgery and it doesn't bother me to much to go all the way down. I like to use the full range of motion on every movement I do.

Heck, With your arms wider you will touch your pecs, just no bouncing, wouldn't want you to break any bones now...

Nose/mouth level. Anything lower hurts my shoulders.

In fact, as the bar comes down in front of my face, I usually like to give the bar a little kiss before sending it back up.

Oops. Did I say that out loud?

I set each rep on my upper chest. Funny thing is, I can't get an incline barbell anywhere near my upper chest anymore due to flexibility issues. This is something I plan to work on this year.
