Ok everyone. The company I work for has offices all over the county, and the world in fact.
There has been some light discussion lately about opportunities (advancement) for me on the West Coast, namely CA, but we're not yet sure where.
So, if anyone lives in or around these areas:
Los Angeles
San Diego
San Fransisco
Palo Alto (less likely),
I could use some advice. Should I get transferred out there, my company is working on a program that will help with the transition from a very low cost of living (housing) area (Houston) to a very high cost of living area (most places in CA). We're not sure what the details of this program are, but my company is well aware that they will have to provide some kind of additional assistance (financial) above their standard cost of living pay grids.
Now, right now I work in Houston but live in a town called Spring. My drive to work is almost exactly 25 miles and takes me 35-40 minutes in standard traffic. The commute would no doubt take longer if I worked the day shift and had to drive to and from work in the morning and afternoon, but right now I'm working the evening shift and I drive to work in the afternoon and drive home late at night.
So what areas around these cities can a family live in? I know the cost of housing out there is crazy right now, so I wanted to get ya'lls opinions. I don't want to get too far into my income in a thread but I can give that kind of info in PM's. We are a 1 income family, though, and TheLil'Missus and I have 2 daughters, 8 & 5, whom we homeschool.
We would love to have a decent house but condos or townhouses are fine too if they are more affordable.
Also, would renting be better than buying?
We wanted to get some input and then maybe start checking out the real estate on the internet. I'm a research/planning fanatic and I like to be thoroughly prepared/educated before making decisions (accepting/declining an offer).
Any input, comments and advice would be helpful.
Thanks ya'll.
