  • IM members, please read. Potential transfer to California. Need advice on areas.

Ok everyone. The company I work for has offices all over the county, and the world in fact.
There has been some light discussion lately about opportunities (advancement) for me on the West Coast, namely CA, but we're not yet sure where.

So, if anyone lives in or around these areas:

    Los Angeles
    San Diego
    San Fransisco
    Palo Alto (less likely),

I could use some advice. Should I get transferred out there, my company is working on a program that will help with the transition from a very low cost of living (housing) area (Houston) to a very high cost of living area (most places in CA). We're not sure what the details of this program are, but my company is well aware that they will have to provide some kind of additional assistance (financial) above their standard cost of living pay grids.

Now, right now I work in Houston but live in a town called Spring. My drive to work is almost exactly 25 miles and takes me 35-40 minutes in standard traffic. The commute would no doubt take longer if I worked the day shift and had to drive to and from work in the morning and afternoon, but right now I'm working the evening shift and I drive to work in the afternoon and drive home late at night.

So what areas around these cities can a family live in? I know the cost of housing out there is crazy right now, so I wanted to get ya'lls opinions. I don't want to get too far into my income in a thread but I can give that kind of info in PM's. We are a 1 income family, though, and TheLil'Missus and I have 2 daughters, 8 & 5, whom we homeschool.
We would love to have a decent house but condos or townhouses are fine too if they are more affordable.
Also, would renting be better than buying?
We wanted to get some input and then maybe start checking out the real estate on the internet. I'm a research/planning fanatic and I like to be thoroughly prepared/educated before making decisions (accepting/declining an offer).

Any input, comments and advice would be helpful.

    Thanks ya'll.

Munster, Right now is not the time to buy here, I live in Orange County and its a sellers market right now, the average 3 bedroom house here is 750,000 and that would be a cheap one, condos are going for 350,000 to 450,000 for 3 bedrooms, I live about 3 miles from the ocean and it get very expensive to own anywhere close to water, if you don't mind the heat the valley is much cheaper but you do not want to drive, we live our lives here around traffic, and no you do not have traffic where you live, just wait til you come here, we got 35 million people in CA and half of them live LA and south.

San Francisco is even more expensive then LA or San Diego...

Noooooooooooooo!!!! Ya'll can't move to California!! I was so excited when I found out where ya'll were from. Plus California is going to end up in the Pacific Ocean in a few years anyway.

Hey, AI. We love Texas, too. Don't get me wrong. But like I said, there has been some light discussions about the West Coast. However, my boss's boss (who has most but not all of the decision making power in this) knows the cost of housing issue out there in CA and isn't sure they (the company) are going to be able to do anything worthy for us to transition out there. He's working on it with his boss and trying to get approval of some kind of plan, but...who knows?

He's just not telling you about the pies and cookies and bad stuff in general. I bake and keep just enough to keep the kids happy, the rest has to go...to the office, to the neighbors, I don't care. It just can't stay in my house. I have the will power of a gnat.

The Munster, on the other hand, will buy a half gallon of chocolate ice cream on Saturday and expect there to be some in the freezer on Tuesday! Yeah. Whatever!

I know what you mean. Earthquakes, fires, save the whales, you can't have guns, gasoline is insanely expensive California. I filled up on diesel today at $1.56/gallon. $1.56!! (Of course, when I got the car almost 4 years ago diesel was less than 90 cents. I can't believe I'm excited about $1.56, but I am.) Can you even own a diesel in California?

Even scarier...I homeschool my girls. Texas has a real hands off policy in this area. There's plenty of folks that would like to regulate it, but we manage to keep them out of our houses. I've got to start looking into how far the state gov. is up everyone's rumps before I completely panic, but its California. I'm panicking pre-emptively!

Hey, lets meet up in Caldwell in September for some kolaches made by little Czech folks! Aaah! They don't even know what kolaches are in California!

Ahh, well. (shrug) It'll all work out like its supposed to. In the mean time I'll go visit Gentleman Jack tonight and wait for The Munster to get home so he can take my mind off of it. Hee hee!
