WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is gathering evidence on the safety of several alternatives to ephedra, the weight-loss herb the agency banned a week ago, the agency's top official said Monday.

Acting FDA Commissioner Lester Crawford said regulators are also compiling data on three other supplements, including kava, a dried root often used as a relaxant that has been linked to liver damage.

"Never again will one of these [supplements] as bad as ephedra take two years" to ban, Crawford said.

The FDA is collecting research results, reports of health problems and other information to help officials decide whether to ban other supplements, he said.

"We've started the clock ticking. Maybe it will result in an ephedra-like decision for some of these [or] maybe not" Crawford said in a speech to the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics in Washington.

Since the agency announced the ephedra ban last December, a number of manufacturers have sought to fill the void with other products, including so-called bitter orange, or Citrus aurantium. The ban took effect last Monday.

Bitter orange contains several substances that produce an ephedra-like stimulation and have been shown to increase blood pressure. But Crawford said it was "too soon to say" whether it should be removed from the market.

While there are similarities, "the concerns are being overblown," said Michael McGuffun, president of the American Herbal Products Association. Many products put forward to replace ephedra are caffeine-based, he said.

The FDA is also compiling data on usnic acid, Crawford said. The lichen-produced chemical is used in some products touting weight control and has been linked to liver damage.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids, compounds found in plants, can be toxic and are also under review, he said.

While most supplements "are probably safe" when used correctly, the industry's diversity and ability to quickly devise new products make it difficult to regulate, Crawford said.

But the recent ephedra court ruling favoring the FDA gave the agency strength to act against other supplements in the future, Crawford added.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition, a supplement industry group, supports FDA's safety efforts, President Annette Dickinson said, adding that many companies have already placed warnings on kava products.

The FDA last month recommended that the National Institutes of Health make studying these four supplements a priority.

Paul Coates, head of NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements, said the institute's ephedra studies put steps in place to evaluate similar products but would not say if any studies were planned.

Now this is bullshit. I am gonna tell ya here and now exactly WTF is going on.

It is quite obvious that herbal and natural medicine are getting more and more popular. Athletes use ephedra for improved performance.

What you probably do not know is that ephedra is a componet of Ma Haung.....and that is used by herbalists, acupuncturists, and alternative/holistic MD's for the treatment of health issues such as bronchial disorders. By banning herbal compounds it will eliminate the effective and cheaper alternative to expensive and useless pharmaceutical drugs.

It is becoming more obvious to me what the gov'ts agenda really is.......banning useful herbs so that we the people must resort to patentable RX drugs as the only option.

AH finally! Someone who sees this accurately (like I do lol).

People, if you want to help put a stop to the BS then find out which Rx companies are sponsoring the bills and who's campaigns they are donating money too. Barage those congressmen with HANDWRITTEN letter after letter telling them how unethical you think this is. Forward the same HANDWRITTEN letters to the Rx companies.

                        We should ban the FDA!!

The FDA approved Baycol, a anti-cholesterol drug that directly killed over 100 people. There is a class action suit against the drug maker, if you know anyone that was harmed or killed by Baycol send me a pm and I will send you the attorney's name that is involved.

FDA approves drugs that kill, well ban the FDA.

Look guys, this is all a political issue. As long as the pharmaceutical companies keep pushing the dollars up the government's ass, the government is going to do exactly what the pharmaceutical lobby wants - which is TOTAL control of the health market. We are talking billions of dollars a year here - if money talks, that much money is quite surely notching up quite a ruckus. It is no secret anymore that both freedom of speech and freedom of decision have been whittled away to nothing by the US Govt today; mainly because the great unwashed can easily be led by their noses to wherever the people in power want them to be led. Decisions made by an American Govt are quickly reflected by copycat decisions made worldwide by ageing politicians who have as much of a spine as a jellyfish and the collective personality of 10 amoebas, whose only interest in life now lies in flossing their nest, engaging in their rabid fantasies, and collecting enough votes to guarantee their position for one more year. It's a vicious circle instigated by the ignorance of the voting public and compounded by the unseen workings of the giant governmental machine. The only way things are ever going to change is if a concerted effort is made via a body who can target the system exactly where it hurts, namely in the exposure of the corruption that riddles the system behind the scenes. Getting pissed off, being angry, and doing nothing about it, is not going to get anyone very far.

Something like this does not only apply to the pharmaceutical market of course (we tend to see this because it hits us as bodybuilders directly). Take for example the RIAA. It is commandeering the government into doing exactly what it wants by passing infair and biased laws that pander to their own money-grabbing decisions. Anyone who follows the copyright issue will know of the farcical situation that arose a couple of weeks ago when a letter supposedly issued by the Attorney General was traced directly to the offices of the RIAA. And that, the RIAA, depsite research that is showing that online music sharing actually BOOSTS sales, is still forcing the government to comply to its own agenda.

Our liberty, our freedom, our right to choose, our right to speak is being unravelled right before our eyes - and we are just letting them do it, like a sheep brought to slaughter. That is some food for thought.

IM is exactly right. If we want our freedom WE MUST organize and expose these people and agencies for what they are.

I think it would be prudent to attempt to organize all of the boards....we are all members of other boards -surely we can organize as a whole, sign petitions, and lobby for our freedoms.

In every movement-civil rights, womens lib, etc...they all started out as a grassroots campaign. We need to do the same.

I am ready to get the ball rolling pronto......anybody in with me??

We can not let this continue. What will they ban next? Creatine? Free weights? The right to leave your house?

I love this quote by Crawford. He confirms what we already know, they are safe if you follow the manufacturers directions.
