    Ben and Jay's Creds

Thought we'd get our "this is why we have our own forum for athletic performance" out of the way with an introduction and our backgrounds.

Ben Bruno will be helping out a little bit, and I will let him chime in here, but I will be primarily looking after the forum.

    Jay Cook's Background:

I currently own and operate Xconditioning - an athletic performance and rehabilitation center in Prince George, British Columbia.

    Education:
    Bachelors of Science in Psychology
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA)

    Sports:
Played baseball competitively through high school, was a middle infielder on one of the best teams in Canada - won back to back premier league championships in 1999/2000.
Played Junior College Baseball for 2 years at Douglas College - was all conference in my sophomore year.
Was British Columbia's Senior Men's 2nd baseman of the year in 2006.
Switched to Bodybuilding in 2003 and did my first show in 2005 - won the "Prairies" Junior Division and finished runner up in the Welterweight division. In 2007 I finished 2nd as a lightweight in the BCs and finished 3rd as a middleweight in the Western Canadians
In 2007 I made the switch to Powerlifting and took home National Silver medals in 2008 and 2009, and in 2010 set a National Squat record (805lbs) at 217lbs bodyweight and won the 220lbs weight class, and in 2011 I set the 2 National records in the 181lb weight class - one for the squat (805lbs) as well as set the National Total record (1721lbs) and earned "elite" status.

    Real World Athletic Training
I have been training athletes for many different sports since 2007. Being in Northern Canada, my clients are primarily for hockey. I currently have athletes in the NHL, AHL, WHL, NCAA Division 1, as well as CIS (Canadian equivalent to NCAA Div 1), and have had several athletes play for their respective countries in the IIHF World Junior Hockey Tournament. I have been the Prince George Cougars (Western Hockey League) Strength and Conditioning Coach for 3 years, as well as the Prince George Spruce Kings (Jr A Hockey) for 5 years, as well as a high school major midget hockey team for 3 years.

I train athletes using all aspects of development, including olympic lifts, power lifts, plyometrics, sprinting and agility drills, and of course conditioning.

First off, an 805 squat is badass! Congrats!

Not really a sport specific question, but I am curious what your raw maxes are in the big 3 and if someone is training for a specific sport, does it matter if they train with or without gear or should a person training for a specific sport stick to raw lifts.

            Thanks !
where do bad folks go when they die ?
they dont go to heaven where the angels fly .
they go to a lake of fire and fry .
won't see em again till the fourth of july .

thanks for the kind words dudesky

I haven't tested my raw maxes in much of anything in a long time, but my best are a 560 squat (knee wraps), 300 bench and 545 deadlift.

Unless you are a competitive powerlifter, I really don't see much point to using powerlifting gear - especially for an athlete who is looking to improve their in-game performance in a sport other than powerlifting. The injury risk/benefit ratio of PLing gear isn't even close. We don't even do max singles with athletes - we typically max out to a 3 rep max - the goal is to supplement their game and improve it, not get them hurt so athletic training can look very different from bodybuilding and/or powerlifting.

              hope that helps

Awesome to see you guys doing this. Jay, you ever play any hockey? I assume yes, since you work with so many and live in Canada. To me, there has never been a sport more exhausting. I played from 3-17, then started back 2 yrs ago.
