recommendations on learning how to pose
I am planning to compete for the first time in late 2005/ early 06. I want to start thinking seriously about practicing posing techniques. I have done some web searching and have come across some good sites (some from this forum), but alot of it is static photos. What is the best approach; should I be looking for someone local to prepare with, or is there any benefit in working with video tapes of posing routines, or are ther any other suggestions I should consider?
Your help is greatly appreciated. |

hey there Ilmar... my recommendation would be to go to as many local bodybuilding shows as u can... look at what the top guys are doing... how they pose, how they transition from pose to pose... try videotaping it all...
i did all that before i ever stood onstage... when it came time to compete, i forgot almost everything i saw... but once i was on stage, it all came to me naturally.... u have to pose like if u were dancing, it has to look graceful and it has to look like an art... good luck with ur future competitive plans.. Find GerryT on this site. He is the man for posing.

ilmar, feel free to contact me by PM or e mail. Pudge is right about going to as many shows as you can. Will give you an idea what to expect and how to prepare However, I found that many competitors especially at lower levels have not learned all the proper techniques before stepping on stage. So you have to be careful who you emulate.
I strongly recommend getting Gary Udit's Perfect Posing videos. They give you all the technique and background you need to start properly practicing. They are available on Gary's web site, www.garyudit.com in VHS or DVD. I use them in my coaching and are invaluable. Also check my articles at www.oldschoolbodybuilding.com and my web page at www.bodybuildingreviews.net (click on Gerry's Posing). |

I watched one of old Gary's videos years back - just once, I think. Excellent advice on posing but perhaps the most boring video on any topic ever... LOL

But his aim is instruction over entertainment, and he definitely produced a great instructional. Anyone who learned from Gary benefited greatly on stage. |

Great! For beginning competitors, this is definitely the best way to go. Recommend seeing it through twice before practicing. Any questions,
feel free to ask. |

This video is REALLY thorough, and REALLY boring too.
But it is invaluable for teaching you the LITTLE THINGS about a pose that you may not think of. I was able to walk through the mandatories this morning with only a couple of little corrections, that I should have known and will get with practice. I recommend the "Perfect Posing" AND the "Perfect Individual Routine" as a set. I am definitely investing in the pre-contest diet one as soon as I can afford it, for the next show.
