Food Irradiation

Food Irradiation

This is the international mandatory food irradiation label
http://www.thebigcarrot.ca/irradiation.htm

Food irradiation is the process of exposing foods to gamma rays for a variety of reasons, including: to kill or render insects incapable of reproducing, to destroy micro-organisms in food, to delay ripening of vegetables and fruits by modifying the biochemistry of the plant's cells, and to inhibit sprouting during storage.

Health Canada's website states that 'To date, the following products have been examined by Health Canada and have been approved for irradiation: potatoes, onions, wheat, flour, whole wheat flour, whole and ground spices, and dehydrated seasoning preparations.

Currently, the technology is not used widely on food commodities in Canada. So far, the main use of irradiation in Canada has been on spices.'1

Though Health Canada says that Food irradiation is a safe process, other research has shown that irradiation destroys vitamin A, C, E, K, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, carotene and thiamine. (source: Hard To Swallow, by Sarjeant and Evans, Alive Books, 1999).

Various studies around the world have shown that animals fed irradiated foods have increased chances of tumours, cataracts, kidney damage, chromosome breakage, fewer offspring and higher mortality.

In addition, it appears as though aflatoxin, a carcinogenic substance produced by molds, occurs in greater quantities in irradiated foods. (source: Coalition to Stop Food Irradition Fact Sheet).

Other products being imported from the United States and elsewhere may be irradiated too.

As usual, the safest way to avoid these contentious experiments is to buy certified organic!

Visit The Organic Consumer's Association for current information about irradiation.

Food- Permitted Source of Radiation- Purpose of Treatment

potatoes cobalt-60 to inhibit sprouting during storage.
onions cobalt-60 to inhibit sprouting during storage.
flour, wheat flour cobalt-60 to control insect infestation in stored food.
spices and seasonings cobalt-60, cesium-137 or machine source electrons to reduce microbial load.

Good article SS....I would compare food irradiation to being about as safe as chemo therapy! This article is proof positive one should be supplementing with the right vits and minerals...

Food irradiation...

When I was going crazy trying to finish my degree in nutrition at Texas A&M (still not done) my first semester back included, of course, a basic course on food processes. All the basics on foods contents and then we got into the various processing methods. Our prof was a leading researcher in the irradiation arena and was hoping for a grant for the college to be able to broadly expand his research. All processing of all foods is the absolute best thing and irradiation is the only way to go with meats and such, in his not so humble opinion. The amount of bs being shoveled into these kids heads was just amazing and they were swallowing it whole. The prof didn't care for questions on his info and since the point of a class is to pass it I did just that and moved along. After all the classes ruined my thinking on a nutrition degree I haven't been back to college. I guess stuff like that goes down better when you don't have notions already in your head about how things really are.

Thanks for the post Super!

Thanks for bringing this point up Lil'.

Something that is very bothersome to me is exactly what you mentioned. The reason these students are taught this rubbish is because the name of the game now in science is "protect your grant".

The vested interest just buys off the educator nowadays.
