ive used both dream and pro tan. thing about dream tan is that it doesn't dye the skin, it actually sits on top of the skin like a coat of make up. if you're not careful it can really smooth you out. pro tan's the way to go for sure. i like useing pro tans hot stuff for the shiny coat. it warms the skin, kinda like vapor rub, bringing out vascularity. smells good too

Dirty Harry,

Same pretty much goes for color for everyone, regardless of skin color, if only to even out skin color.

I would use the Olympic Sun (see prev. post).

For my last show, i did about 5 coats of protan and the early morning of the show, i put one coat of Jan Tana Competition Tan. As for oil, i used Jan Tana but i think i'll take everyone's advice and try Pam spray this time.

All I use is Jan Tana, just one coat and the posing oil right over it.. I touch-up with Pam between classes, and before my night routine. I like the JT posing oil, it warms up on your skin, and it smells nice..

I am gonna use the protan comp color and the 'muscle sheen' oil right before going on
The guys (incluiding myself) who used pam all looked too oily.
The guys using the actual Jan Tan or Protan oils all looked 'satin'

The problem that most guys complained about with dream tan is that you 'must' use pam as you cannot "rub" oil on over dream tan
There were about 3 or 4 guys using the dream tan and it looked way too messy and none of them were without streaks

You gotta blot off the Pam, spraying it on heavy makes you oily.. Just spritz on a light coat, then blot with a towel..

At the ProIronman this year, the athletes were not allowed to use Pam, so many of them used baby oil. They suffered under those hot lights and lengthy prejudging. They were very frustrated when I finally got back stage and I had to blot several of them off because they were so shiny. That night, we used the pam anyway and they felt and looked better. I never spray pam directly on the person.M I spray it on my hands first then rub it on. I have also used a product by Protan, called Muscle Sheen posing gel. I used that last year on the athletes at the USA and it looked excellent.
I have used Dream Tan, it rarely looks nice. The judges don't like it and in some places athletes are not allowed to use Dream Tan. It might be fine for photo shoots, but I would not recommend it for a competition.

As for the application of the Pro Tan Comp Color
I am planning to put 1 heavy coat on Wed pm and shower Thursday am
1 heavy coat Thurs pm and shower Friday am
then 1 heavy coat Friday pm, touch up on Saturday and let dry long enough to use the Muscle Sheen instead of pam after pumping up
Is this a decent plan?
How easy does the MS go on, I know it's kind of a gel?

Why are you starting so early? When are you shaving? Remember you really don't want to shave after you put the protan on...and you do not want to put the protan on right after you shave!!!! Shave real good Thursday night, late, then one coat, don't put any on your face, then Friday, put on 3-5 coats, real quick, I use a bowl with a wash cloth, just dip and slosh on! Protan is pretty good and doesn't streak, when you get up Saturday am, check for spots, touch up and go, when you get ready to do your face and head if you are bald, just use the wash cloth without dipping it in the bowl, the muscle sheen is really nice, I was a total pam user, but when I used the muscle sheen at the USA I was impressed, I used it on Erik Bui and Chris Cook and many others and they looked really even and not shiny. Pam is not bad, just don't spray it directly on, put it on your hands first..then pat and rub it on. I am REALLY picky about how I do oil and color on athletes. Take your time, make sure the week before your contest you keep your skin real hydrated, I sleep in leggings and long sleeve shirts, I cover myself with lotion first, you want your skin happy and not all dried out, you are going to be dehydrating...enough as it is!

Yes and thank you for noticing. I received a copy of the DVD in the mail, sat down on a rainy day at school to show it to my students and surprise surprise, there I was. It was a total surprise. I figured that would have been edited out!. I meet him at that contest every year and get him ready. Super nice guy!

Hey, thanks a lot for the advice.
The reason I was gonna start early was to build up a base color as I have a problem with multiple coats "clumping" on top of each other.
I wanted to try and avoid that by showering the excess surface liquid off a few times while retaining some of the color.
I will do my final shave on Thursday night.
Do you prefer a washcloth, or will a big sponge do just as well?

Clumping can be a problem, but if you shower it off, then put in another coat, there will be spots with 2 coats and then the bald spots with one...this gets worse with each successive coat. If your skin is hydrated enough it will help. Once you use the wash cloth method, you will never use the little sponge again. When I am doing color, these guys are huge and it would take forever if I used the stupid sponge. Most athletes by the time you get ready to color, are tired, carb depleted, thirsty and do not want to stand while I spray and paint with that tiny sponge. The cloth is fast and easy. There is a guy that pays me to meet him early in Las Vegas to do his color and we got down to a 15 minute deal! Remember, you are going to be very dry and protan will make your skin dryer, which is why you have problems with clumping. Be nice to your skin and you will have good results. I love helping people like you, I make you look good on stage. One of my favorites is Will from the USA last year and Idrese, he tells everyone I am his oil lady!!! Please feel free to contact me. buffwoman@hotmail.com

Everyone at the show was using competition color, one or two coats
Wait until Sat morning to apply
scrub Saturday night and it fades out pretty well and doesn't leave your face looking 'wierd'

for my last 2 shows i have used dream tan formula 2 and have been very happy with the results...i have also seen some bad results using it...using too much can really be a mess ...also using formula 1 tends to give that bronze statue look which isnt good for comp. and the judges dont like it.

Well, I seem to be one of those difficult cases when it comes to coloring. I have used Pro Tan, I have used Olympic Sun with Dyoderm as a base and I have used Dream Tan. Both Pro Tan and the Olympic Sun / Dyoderm combo give me this ghastly greenish hue that looks really bad under the stage lights, even though the color looks really good under the sun's light (I think it was Randy that mentioned to me that the type of lighting used in the venue can make a big difference to how the color is seen). The best thing I have used so far is Dream Tan as far as coloring goes, but that is only a relative comment because Dream Tan is indeed messy, hard to apply correctly, stains skin and clothes, is impossible to get off plaster, expensive curtains and bed sheets (boy, I can still hear the screams) and will streak with the slightest touch, which makes it a less than ideal candidate to use on stage - some poses will leave you looking like a melting piece of chocolate. Plus, if you sweat, and it runs into your eye, it burns like jumping jiminy. Not to mention that it stains contact lenses a maroon red color so you'll end up thinking you have permanently dropped in onto the set of Dawn of the Dead. Pam is not bad, but it's too easy to end up looking too shiny with it, and if you are forced to use Dream Tan like I am, blotting will leave ugly patches that are lighter than the surrounding color and these are pretty hard to even up at the last moment. Meaning, I am looking for working substitutes for both the color and the oil.

Thus, I am very open to advice from professionals here like Buffwoman, who really knows what she is talking about. Incidentally, may I take some time to thank both Buffwoman and Randy for being so patient with me and helping me with my color on the last show - pity my skin seems to be so unco-operative. So Buffwoman, if you want to take me on as a guinea pig, I am very available - I compete again September 2006 which should give us ample time to come up with a working solution, which I sorely need. Would you be so kind?

sniffy54 is an unknown quantity at this point
pro tan, pro tan, pro tan

the way to go is pro tan

here's the trick...you need like four coats of it. when one coat dries you go into the shower to "smooth" out the streaks.

i would start thursday night with the first application, then 2-3 more on friday depending on how the tan looks. then i did one more early saturday morning--came out perfectly.

i even used it on my face but again you have to becareful cause the first time i did it looked like i had fallen face forward in a pile of dog crap.
