remembering sonny

we were sitting last night remembering that its the late Sonny Schmidt's birthday. top guy that helped me always with a smile when I just came down under with very little money and shit load of trouble.
excellent fighter . and the best guy to stand on a door next to you when there is real trouble.( that's right , that's why I am bouncer Dave.)
one of the best bb I have ever seen.
shame about the "friends" that helped him in the end to get in trouble ,and the suffering in the end. and the privecy that was kept by all.

but its great thing that everyone , even the worse of them last night , had only good things to say about sonny.

and wasn't he the best show in town when he was posing?

Bouncer Dave the very very first pro show I went to was the Night of Champions-----Mohamed Bennazizza winning and Dorian Yates first pro show (he placed second and everyone was abuzz about who the big thick English bloke was)....also in that show and I might be wrong about this but was Sonny Schmidt in his first pro show and if it wasnt for Dorian he would of been the talk of the show.....great build...wide shoulders....awesome standing relaxed pose....I almost felt sorry for him because if Dorian wasnt there everyone would of been talking about the "Big Aussie" instead.

He lived down here (SD) for awhile with Milos and Achim Albrecht...well liked by all.

I dont know the ending well....what i heard was he was taken advantage of by so-called friends which left him high and dry....went to a place very down on his luck and discovered a lump in his shoulder that he originally thought was built up scar tissue but turned out to be cancer that spread quickly (to his lungs if i remember right) and took his life

Am i right in that or the story was reported wrong?

Dante, I agree. Sonny, along with everyone else, was really overshadowed (pun intended) by Dorians appearance on the scene. Looking back I have a whole new appreciation of just how good a bodybuilder he really was. Nothing missing...Incredible balance... And I can't hear AC/DC's 'Thundestruck' without smiling and thinking of him.

I actually think his pro debut was at the 1990 NOC where he placed 6th (Dorian second, Momo first).
It was the 91 NOC that Sonny placed runner up to Dorian.

I believe Sonny's first pro show was here in Australia in the late 1980's. The show featured Robby Robinson (1st) and Gary Strydon in second. Another Australian pro, Ian Riley, also made in debut in that show.

I was with Sonny in 1995 when he won the Masters Olympia. He was so happy, but didn't want to celebrate too hard, because he competed in the Olympia the following evening. I really enjoyed listerning to the stories he would tell after training at Doherty's.

He was a good friend.

last time I saw him in a boxing match crowed. I was with a very good friend of him and a boxing promoter , we could not believe that the guy coming to us was sonny. the promotor is the one telling me about the hiv. he was helping him to the end.
hope its ok tell.
