skip,
why so much decline pressing?

i ask because usually people focus on inclines for a weak upper chest etc..

I don't have a weak upper chest. ; )

Seriously, I do incline work second in my chest training so that my shoulders are that much more warm. My chest development is pretty balanced so I don't really need to force the inclines as much as most people do.

No bodyweight taken.

Trained back, traps and did biceps at night with cardio after running out of time in the a.m.. I am struggling to get a lot of things done this week with leaving for Melissa's show in Sante Fe on Friday morning, my oldest daughter coming home this past Tuesday night, etc.. I just want to get through this week. lol

Everything is going well in the gym, though. I just feel great with the new schedule and my condition is very good. I wish I could remember to take my weight. Hopefully, I can hit it tomorrow because I won't get a weight the entire weekend being out of town.

Back -
neutral grip chins +25 x 9, x 6, 0 x 5, x 4 + 1fr
supported tbar rows 4p x 8. x 7, x 6
wide grip assisted chins (I do these assisted with the machine so that I can go very wide but still finish the reps - real chins I would not be able to finish the reps at the top) -60 x 8, x 6, x 6
supported alternating dumbell row 60 x 9, x 8
long pulley rows 180 x 10, x 8

Absolutely shot after this session. Great session, though.

Traps -
dumbell shrugs 120 x 9, x 7, x 6, x 6

Came back to do EZ bar curls for biceps before cardio at night.
Biceps -
EZ curls 80 x 9, x 6, 70 x 7, x 6, 60 x 8, x 7
Did these all in about 10 minutes including quite a few warm ups.

30 minutes of cardio.

I am contemplating coming back in the p.m. on the days I train (Mon, Wed and Fri) and training a smaller bodypart instead of cardio and just doing cardio on Tuesday and Thursdays. I like doing the cardio and 30 minutes is a breeze but I am too curious if training a smaller bodypart might still keep me lean much like coming back and doing the cardio does - especially if I train quickly in the p.m. like I have been doing. Example: I would come back and do triceps on Monday and biceps and lowerback on Wednesdays and then do calves and abs on Fridays.

Thinking about it....

ever done something like this before, Skip? My buddy did something (2 a day splits) like this before, he obviously wasn't as advanced as you, but it is basically what REALLY kickstarted his bodybuilding career, and just 2 months ago, he won the overalls (he was a super Heavy) at only his 3rd show (the Mike Francois Classic- national qualifier)...he did kind of heavy lifting compound work, very brief int he morning, and came back and trained for hypertrophy later.

I would imagine this would work really well.

I would do separate bodyparts from a.m. to p.m., though. Basically, train my strong bodyparts in the p.m. with a quick pace. It is easy for me to do because of the flexibility of my schedule but giving up cardio to only 2 days a week is not something I am sure I want to do.

Didn't get a weight. Just too damned busy and too many things on my mind as I try to get out of town for Melissa's show this weekend.

Trained quads, hams, calves and abs

Quads -
high angle hacks 315 x 20, x 12, x 9
extensions 4 plates for 2 sets of 8-10 and 3 plates for the same
regular squats (didn't eat reps this time lol) 225 x 9, x 7, x 6
absolutely wasted after this

Hams -
lying leg curls 110 x 10, 100 x 10, 90 x 9

Calves -
standing calf raises for 4 sets
horizontal hammer calf presses for 4 sets

Abs -
5 sets of machine crunches

No cardio due to leg day.

Heading out of town for Melissa's show so no entries until Monday. Will be on my diet with food in tow, though.

Pics are from today at about 220-222 or so but that is my best guess because I didn't weigh myself.

No bodyweight taken but feeling really watery and bloated from the weekend. I didn't drink much water on Friday due to traveling and even though I took my food with me and ate solid for Friday and Saturday, I did break off the diet for Saturday night and some on Sunday. Saturday night I actually had some mexican food which I rarely do because I am not too fond of it but it was Sissy's day and she wanted Mexican so that is what we had. On Sunday the first meal was typical with pancakes and the like but I knew I was going to be traveling home and wasn't going to be eating for a while so I had some things like bacon, etc., too. Ended up eating only 4 times on Sunday. By the time I was back on track for Monday I was starting to bloat up pretty good. lol I am sure after a couple days it won't be an issue and the water will come off, though.

Trained chest, delts and tris

Chest - decline bench 315 x 11, x 6, 275 x 6
incline hammer 405 x 6, 365 x 6, 315 x 6
flat dumbell press 90 x 6, 85 x 6
pec deck 2 sets of 8-10 with 60 lbs.

Delts -
overhead seated hammer press 255 x 6, 225 x 5, 185 x 7 (absolutely wasted after this)
cable side laterals 30 x 12, x 8, 25 x 9, x 8 (went lighter for more reps after such heavy presses)

triceps -
lying tricep extensions on decline 5 sets of 110, 90, 90, 80, 70 for speed sets (one set after another for as many reps as I can get)

Cardio in p.m. for 30 minutes.

I have started doing my cardio outside with a fast walk so that I can do all of my cardio while at either football or softball practice. I have one or the other Monday through Friday for 2 hours a day so it saves me a lot of time to just do it while practice is going on instead of going to the gym after practice. Working out well for now.

Bodyweight = 219.5

flex machine rows 180 x 10, x 7, x 6
narrow grip latt pulls 170 x 9, x 7, x 6

Traps -
hammer shrugs 495 x 9, x 8, x 7, x 6

Leg Work

Hey Skipp,

Since I haven't seen a full pic of you, I'm wondering why your only doing legs once a week and not including them into the normal cycle that I've seen with other routines in here. . Are your legs a strong point for you or any more than once a week will cause them to over train or get to sore? Look forward to following your training!

Max

I admit that I got side-tracked after the show with my weight going up and it was easy to do because I was still in great shape all the way to pretty much 230. Even at 230 I was the leanest and strongest I had been at that weight but ..... as I started to slowly go past 230 and get even stronger, you guessed it, my back started fucking with me and giving me problems again.

I tried. I secretly tried to make a run at a relatively lean 245-250 by the end of the year (the leanest I would have even been at that weight) but I just can't do it. I fool myself because just like everyone else, I don't like to admit that I am getting older and have limitations that I just can't ignore. It is what it is. Plus, my gut was starting to get big again and I don't like that look so I was starting to feel a little shitty about my condition. I want to stay pretty lean and I was going against that as I got caught up in it all. It is easy to do.

Anyway, I will be starting this journal or log officially tomorrow and plan to detail my training and my philosophies about training, etc.. I plan to use a lot of pics and video, too, so I hope it will be fun and entertaining. I won't be taking this one down as I made sure that as I come into this log that it is something that I am willing to keep up. I feel better about this one because I can now be as detailed a I want to and not be giving up information that others may perceive as trade secrets and take them as their own. It also allows me to do some experimenting with my nutrition and not have it under a microscope, at the same time.

My training split will remain the same as I start this next phase of leaning out a bit. I don't have a goal weight or anything like that. I just plan to lean down and get the look back that I like.

Split:

Monday a.m.
chest, delts, tris, calves

Tuesday p.m.
back, traps, bis, lowerback

Thursday p.m.
quads, hams, calves, abs

Friday p.m.
repeat of Monday

The following Monday would have me doing the back workout and then repeating that on Friday. The upperbody workouts cycle through every 2 weeks but legs remain only once a week. This seems to be working well and my primary focus is on my back and then delts and chest. I plan to do very little calf, tri and bi training in relation to everything else due to them being very strong points. Obviously, legs aren't going to be trained with priority, either.

I will get a weight tomorrow after being a pig for the weekend and go from there.

I am also going to leave this thread open for questions and dialogue. That way, all questions and info about training is here and not going into my Skip thread.

Max,
That training schedule was from earlier this year. I have since dropped the repeat workout and only train 3 times a week. My legs and arms, though, are strong points so I don't train them like I do shoulders, chest and back. I could stand more thickness in my legs but they are such a strong point on stage that right now I prefer to give the attention to other areas. I train legs once a week but will sometimes even skip a week for added recovery.

Welcome to IM, Max.

No bodyweight taken.

I almost didn't train today due to getting a fever late last night and then a massive headache that lasted into this morning. I have NO idea why and as quickly as it hit, it was gone. *shrug*

I decided to train thinking that if things didn't go well out of the blocks, I would just come home. The session was great and for some reason my headache didn't bother me during my training session which was weird because it was damned sure still there.

Went with pretty low reps last week - a little lower than I am used to so decided to make sure that I was a just a tad lighter this week and getting a few more reps. Instead of staying at the top weight for 2 or 3 sets I decided to drop the weight for most of the sets.

Chest -
low incline smith 275 x 10, 255 x 7, 225 x 8
decline dumbell presses 100 x 10, x 7, 90 x 8
decline bench 225 x 8, x 7
pec deck 2 sets with 120 pounds for 10-12 slow reps

Delts -
push press or cheat press 135 x 10, x 8, x 7
seated side laterals 25 for 4 sets of 10-12

Triceps -
incline EZ extensions for 5 sets FAST 100, 100, 90, 80, 80

The pace was fast the entire workout.

I am going to take your word over my teenage daughter's word, then, because she doesn't seem to think I am cool anymore. lol

I am pretty much 100% after my little pec issue and have been coming back without any issues. My lowerback is a nagging problem but... it likely will always be an issue to some degree. I will just try to be as smart about training around it as I can.

I am doing the Jr. USAs next year, I do believe. I have my sites set on it and am very motivated right now training for it. I am hoping Sissy will join me there so that we can both do it together. She is interested but is holding off for a month or so to think it through. We would both be going with the best packages we can put up there with low expectations as to how we will do. I train to win but realistically I am not convinced I can be terribly competitive at that level. When in doubt, jump your ass in and find out and that is just what I will be doing.

Had a great back workout last Wednesday and a great leg workout on Friday but had so much going that I forgot to update the journal. My weight ended at 219 before my refeed on Sunday and the refeed was a pretty good one. Nothing eventful to note.
