Protein question...

I'm a bit confused. A gram of carbohydrates is 4 calories. A gram of protein is also 4 calories. So why does it take more energy to metabolize protein? If it takes more energy to metabolize protein then shouldn't it be more than 4 calories?

The amount of energy that it takes to metabolize a nutrient is not related to the amount of energy contained within it. The caloric value of a nutrient is the amount of energy that can be generated by the body using that nutrient, not the amount that the body has to use to get to the fuel.

Like if you were making gas out of straight up crude oil and also from oil shale. The shale is going to take a hell of a lot more energy to convert into a usable form than the crude is for an equal amount of usable fuel.

Roy, I have a challenge for you.

Do not start a thread for one week. If you have a burning desire to know something, hit up wikipedia or google. If you still do not find your answer, post a thread at the end of the week. You can do it!

Cool challenge, Dude. It'll take work, but he can do it. Good learning experience.

/oh, and you guys forgot the phase of the moon on the metabolic rate of proteins. That's ok, everybody does... ;-)
