I always like to overshoot my working sets too.

So if I'm going to do a set of 4-6 with 250lbs on bench, I might work up to a single with 265-275lbs.

It's a VERY wide range according to doctors. About 200-1000 ng/dL.

Which is BS.

But anyway,

Have you ever tried overshooting your works sets, Ben?

Brendan ...do you overshoot the working sets as a way to potentiate the CNS? for neural activation... instead of just warming up to a poundage below the weight of the working set

Brendan...never tried it, but as millerizer said, it can be useful for CNS activation

a HUGE natty dude who posts at MD.com and BB.com does something similar prior to his working sets

I'm doing good...except I'm getting too fat and skiping too many workouts to focus on school projects I've had

let's say you can do 315 on bench

you warm-up, then work up to a single with 335 or something (not necessarily a 1RM)

I can't remember exactly, but I think that reciprocal inhibition (maybe I'm using the wrong words, lol) of the golgi tendon organ will allow you to perform more work with a slightly lighter weight

Hmmm....that's interesting. I may have to try that.

Ive even read articles for testing 1RM where you load 110% or so and just lift off and hold the bar prior to doing your max effort. So I would assume.. lifting 90% of your max once could be beneficial if you were doing your working sets at about 80%....

Havent really tried it though since it would take extra work//amount of time to work up to the final warm up set which actually exceeds the weight of the working set...

Yes bro, CNS potentiation is exactly why I do it.

You can only really use it if you're doing more than 5 reps per set. Otherwise, it's hard to overshoot the working weight enough without causing fatigue.

If you're doing less than 5 reps per set, I'd recommend the supramaximal hold protocol you mentioned.

the holding techinque sounds like golgi tendon threshold training, similar to how powerlifters do lockouts to prevent their triceps giving out as a safety precaution at the top of a bench press

Thanks Ben and Brendan,

I had heard of the methods, but the golgi tendon information was good to know.
