Showoff Swingslammers "One a day" Iron, Only 450 days to go !!!!

OK....So here we go. I am Cal...sometimes known as Swingslammer [ My porn star/ Pro wrestler name].......sometimes known as SGT. P. ..........Most times still known as Dad or Daddy.
I just want to give some background first and then start in to my journal...OK?
I started lifting the summer before my freshman year in high school, I was 5'5" [still am] and 105 Lbs. I played football since I was 5 as a center and thought I was too small to be a high school lineman. Some of my buddies were lifting at the school and I thought I would give it a try. That first day I think I think I benched about 85 pounds....but I came back for more. Once I was hooked I lifted 2 sessions a day all summer....went home and ate a "Arnold Burger" [ 1 pound of hambuger, 3 eggs and about 1/3 of a block of Velveeta cheese] and passed out till dark....already living the "Bodybuilding lifestyle" and didn't even know it existed!!

Well I gained 20 pounds that summer and started freshman ball as a 125 pound center....I benched 135 for 10 before the summer was up and squatted 315 for 4 to 6 reps....all my friends said lifting was the sport for me since I made such good gains so fast.A guy invited from school invited me over to his house and happened to have some "Muscle builder and fitness" magazines around....I saw Arnold and Franco and that was it..... I had to look like that! I ended my freshman year weighing 155 so I gained 50 pounds in one year.

Next summer we were all lifting at school again and someone hung up a poster for the Mr. Springfield contest.......did I really know anything about Bodybuilding...NO, but I told everyone I was going to enter anyway. I was 15 and there was no teen class yet considering it was 1980 so I had to enter novice. There was one other 15 yearold guy there...Kent T., we met and are still friends today....worked out with him just 3 weeks ago. Neither one of us placed but we were hooked and joined a "Real gym" together after that.

Let me say something about drugs here.......being so young I was never offered steroids by any Dudes at the gym...and made great gains on my oun. I weighed 185 when I graduated high school all natural so I stayed that way.......several guys I knew from school started lifting after high school and immediately got on the juice......I might have too EXCEPT I always wanted to be "Differant", that is why I got in to Bodybuilding....because it was differant than what other people were doing....so I stayed clean and I somewhat thank those guys for it.
Continued to compete and just like Ron Harris I have a closet full...FULL of 2nd place trophies.

Even lived in Venice CA for 2.5 years....living the "Lifestyle"....which means broke and lifting.....and got up to 220 steady and 225 if I drank a shit load of water! I could see out there though that I was never going to be a National champ or Mr Olympia and got tired of eating every 2 hours on the dot.... so I gave up and came back to Missouri. I thought I would never compete again so I let my weight go back down to 185 or so.

Every body needs a "Fallback" plan so at 31 I joined the Army Reserves and let them turn me into a Respiratory therapist. Turned 32 during basic training but since I had always trained and was doing triathalons before I went I had no problems physically. Came back to Missouri again......got a good job, married a great women....went to the gym twice a week for 20 to 30 minutes so that if anyone asked I could still say I was working out and watched my weight climb to a very sloppy 205. Stay with me here...this is almost over..

Got deployed to Kosovo in 2000 and and some young guys asked me what kind of changes could they make while we were deployed?? I said " I will train like I used to, you guys workout with me and we will see what kind of changes will happen"....they lasted about 2 weeks and I never quit again....came home 180 and all ready to compete again.

Continued my long string of 2nd and 3rd place finishes and when I adopted my daughter and son at 40 and 41 decided to go on to active duty so my wife could stay home and raise the kids.............................................. ..........................................and now I am all packed waiting to leave for Iraq...........450 days and a wake up to go !!!!

Ok....so here comes the "DC" part...... I have pretty muched stayed 185 or so for over 20 years....am I dissapointed?? No because that 185 has changed to way it looks steadily over the years.

BUT.....the moment you think you know everything you are dead in the water! I did one blast last summer and enjoyed the differance in training but very soon after the contest from these pictures I switched over to Active Duty Army and just did maintance type training while I retrained for Military Intell. Then I got to Germany but it was one training thing after another so I am going to really get going in Iraq.

Like I said I did blast but I did not do the stretches or do what I want to call " DC Eating"....but this time I will. I am 42 and have struggled to get down to lightweight but was too small for middleweight....well during the next 15 months I am going to try to COMPLETELY skip middleweight and shoot for a light lightheavyweight.....sounds crazy doesn't it?? Well I have read some of the success Dante has had and why should I be any differant than those guys??

Now let me ask you "Veterans" some questions......last time I blasted I did lets say 315 on the smith incline for 14 reps and I stayed with 315 till I got to 20 reps with it and THEN added some weight and shot for getting to 20 reps again. That doesn't seem to be how some of you are doing it?? What do you think I should do?

P.S. I like learning something about people so this journal won't just be weights and reps......but more like me just telling you about my workouts and what is up with me....thanks, Cal

Finally, you have made the journal! I am excited for you to start this new journey; new Blast. In regards to or last question, I think the majority of us, and I think it is written somewhere, that the goal is to move up in weight as much as you can in a rep range. Why add 1 rep; when you can add 5-10 lbs? Also, at times, it is much harder to add 1-2 reps than it is to add 5 lbs. Look at deadlifting for example...A person that deadlifts 500 lbsx6 would find it better to probably go to 505x4-6 vs trying to do a whole other rep with 500 lbs! The improvement is smaller; maybe 25 lbs total workload vs 500 lbs--which is a big workload increase.

Anyways--get going, and I hope to see you soon!

Subscribed! Great biography you've got there. Since I'm in my mid 30's, I'm very interested to see what kind of gains can still be made with hard work and dedication when I'm in my 40's.

I'm subscribed. Best of luck with everything. I use the same method that Slayer does. If I feel that I can come within 2-3 reps of the last time I did the exercise, but with a little more weight, I'll go up in weight, But if I was in the lower rep range of an exercise I would keep the weight for next time then really aim for the upper end of the rep range if not higher.

Well I said I had done a blast last summer.....BUT....I have always done 1 bodypart a day and only take a day off when I really felt like it. So when I did it last summer I did 1 bodypart but in a DC type fashion.
This is the first time I am doing a split and taking days off and doing the stretches.....basically just trying to do it the "Right" way. So here is todays workout.... I am just feeling out weights till I get into Iraq and really get going.

Biceps...Barbell curls in rest pause fashion....135 x 7+4+3= 14 Reps.

Forearms...Hammer curls....75x22+12+12=46 Reps or 23 on each arm.
[alittle too light]
Calves, Hammer strength leg press...5 45s+25 per side x 15+8+7=30 reps.

Hams...SLDL= 275 X 10, 315 X 6, 225 X 12 [Was shooting for 20, a WM]

Quads...Hammer strength Leg press...10 45s per side x 10, 11 45s+25 x 5, WM with 8 45s per side for 20 reps.....legs were burning!

Gym was about to close so I did 8 minutes of HIT cardio for 115 calories.

There you have it...see you, Cal

You know how they say fat peoples bodies will always try to gain weight back to thier "Set point" or the point thier body thinks is normal? Well I have been 180 to 190 soo long my body will just loose to get back to that weight. I am pretty sure that is why people will say you can't just bulk to a certain weight and then cut......you have to get to that weight and hold it quite awhile for your body to think that is normal.

Man I was home in Missouri in July and this guy in the over 50 masters was killing everybody in the Masters overall and did pretty well......so there is still plenty of time for you.....get to it!

In Kuwait....man is it hot, but survivable. Doing some weight setting workouts or just getting the log book rolling. I had to do a night shift the last 2 nights so this dude who really wants do do DC with me and has been working out with me says he was going to skip tonight because i wasn't with him. I told him "Hey I went without you" I thought he was going to blow it off....which would tell me something about his resolve to stick with it......and a few minutes later I look over and he has his belt and lifting straps and is heading out the door. I stopped him and said "You know this tells me something about how serious you are about this, thanks for going ahead and working out on your oun"....so we will see? Thanks guys, see you, Cal

Hey Rob, you didn't let the guy ease into it--knowing you, you probably torched his ass from day one!

SS--glad you made the 1st stage safely; you know you are into lifting when you go alone, through bad weather, or lack of sleep.
