at the age of 17, the biggest improvement you can make is in your knowledge. dont do everything you see in the magazines. hell, dont do anything you see in the magazines. remember to stick to a basic routine with basic compound movements. above all else, read books, read journals and posts and threads on this website. read books on nutrition, learn about food, learn about your diet and learn what foods work for you. go ass to grass on squats, do deadlifts from the floor, and dont fall into the " flat bench mentality" build a good foundation for yourself by building a foundation based on knowledge. dont do barbell curls in the power rack. and remember to rest. just because arnold worked out 6 days a week, doesnt mean you have to. you are 17. use your youth to your advantage. and finally, dont get caught up in the " i must buy every supplement on the market mind frame either " knowledge is the best thing you can improve on. good luck

Get your form down first, then pile on the weight, do the main three lifts (Bench, Squat and Deadlift) and worry about all the rest later. Stay focused this is a life long journey!

you need to start eating!!!! eat eat eat train eat rest eat eat eat. The mean face thing isn't really working for ya either. I would try something a little less hardcore like say a closed mouth smile no teeth. It can show your tough side but says you can be friendly. I would try the tough guy look again at about 230 lbs, it might work might not , but atleast you will have some muscle to back it up.

i agree with everyone on the core movements and sticking to the basics. Also if you could post more pics of yourself it could help to critique on what you would need to focus on. Also refer to this website like duckduck said. It has helped me a lot.

Like it's been said, stick to your big 3 compound lifts, train and eat hard. You need muscle everywhere (not to be harsh), don't waste your time like most young guys doing a million concentration curls to find that bicep vein. Also, you must remember it's a marathon and not a race.

Study the historical figures of the sport. For me, it's Dorian Yates. I've always been strong, but it was all useless until I switched to the Highly Efficient Hardcore High Intesity training of Yates. I don't copy everything he does, but he's a very, "stick to the basics" type of guy. I like his traing technique and his mentality on training gets me in and out of gym in about an hour only 4 days a week.

Study how to eat, when to eat, and what to eat! Food is the key, but more importantly is proper rest!

this is some terrible advice to give a 17 year old. high intensity training is a very advanced way to train. no 17 year old should be training high intensity.

I would love to be in your position kid. If I could rewind my life ten years to when I was 17, throw away the M&F, Flex, etc and just find a good message board to get my information from I would be much better off right now.

Here are the three main things that I can stress to you. This is what I wish I knew when I was your age.

Number one...
As far as training goes I think that the 5x5 program would probably be something that would fit in nicely with your goals right now. You really want to focus on squatting, deadlifting, rowing heavy, and doing presses for your chest and shoulders. There is no need to do anything to complicated or concentrated.

Number Two...
You need to eat kid. Try to work out a schedule where you can eat six times a day. I know that with school it can be a pain in the balls, but you can do it. You just look at your schedule and think, okay I already eat breafast, lunch and dinner. I have to figure out how to get a meal in between breakfast and lunch, between lunch and dinner and then again before I go to bed. Maybe you could put a couple of chicken sandwiches in your locker and pound them in between classes. Who knows, but you have to eat to grow.

Number Three...
You need your rest. At your age you need a ton of rest. Your body is doing things on its own besides muscle building that require a lot of rest. So, eight hours a night should be your minimum. Take naps on off days. Do whatever it takes, but your body won't grow if its all stressed out from not enough sleep.

Besides this stuff you also need to remember that you are 17. You shouldn't tell yourself that you can't have a girlfriend because it would get in the way of your training. Thats the wrong thought. Think that you should train to grow to be massive so you can bang the hottest chicks you can find. You need to look at bodybuilding as something that will compliment everything else that you do in your life, not something that you have to live the rest of your life around.

Good luck kid. Hope to see you at the top some day.

Well, I just turned 18 two days ago. So, obvioulsy most of my training was done when I was 17. Yates' training style works best for me. It really wasn't advice to tell him to train like Dorian, it was an example. In essence of my above post, I merely said study. That's all, just research the sport.

Trial and Error is the best teacher. Try something that you think might work, and if it doesn't, change it or make alterations. I know where you're coming from takedown. I didn't have shoulder surgery, but I did have wrist surgery, and will be having another in May. I just turned 18, so I'm not much older than you. Just start slow, not going too heavy to hurt that shoulder again, but work for quality reps (slow and controlled).
