I believe in staying relatively lean in the offseason, as well. HOWEVER, most guys who are lean in the offseason are lean because of their blessed metabolisms - NOT because they eat rediculously clean and do cardio to keep the bodyfat under control. So, unless you are genetically gifted and/or know your body so well that you can grow at a good clip while staying lean with your diet, most guys opt for the added bodyweight in the offseason to ensure that they are growing. I know I was married to my bodybuilding progress and I ate for YEARS exactly what I was supposed to and when I was supposed to. Thing is, not everyone has such a boring life as I do. I didn't drink for over a couple years. I didn't even like to go out because I might miss a meal or have to piss every 20 minutes or shit every couple hours. The added weight in the offseason due to added caloric intake allows guys to progress in adding size without being married to the lifestyle and still able to have fun and be a bit normal.

For what it's worth, though, I never liked the bulked up, water logged, round face look and I am loving that I am getting rid of that very thing right now after getting out of competing. I HATED it. I am married and I can only imagine how that must suck to be bloated and round faced and trying to get some fine ass. lol
