What would you do?
Ok, so i have a type 1 or 2 tear in both of my labrums and superspinatus damage in both shoulders and i was wondering what you guys would think about opting for surgery in one arm or both over time? I know if i get surgery on one then the other will still be a pain in my ass until i tear that one worse so i think surgery on both might be a good road and get it all out at once. The pt im going to now is working good but the pain is still there, and this is my second pt doing exercises my ortho told her to do with me and apparently he is a pioneer in shoulder rehabilitation. So what about you guys out there who have been through the SLAP tear department with labrum tears ect. What was your road to recovery like?

no matter what, theres going to be some hardware involved. I had two procedures on my left shoulder. First arthroscopic procedure couldn't be done. Too much damage. they opened me up. Its a VERY tough surgery if it has to be opened. It took me a LONG time to recover with alot of pain. I would say do one arm at a time. |

I've never had an injury that requires surgery & I don't mean to lecture, but it appears you need to listen to your body's signals more. I'm not saying you use them, but the problem I have noticed with people using supplements is sure.. they speed recovery. However, they apparently mask alot & an injury never gets a chance to fully recover which leaves that area weaker to future injury in the long run. Every body is different.. genetics, chemicals, etc. You may need more recovery time between workouts than someone else {or even an entire group of people}. It would be better to do both for the reasons you mentioned, but just one arm at a time & mentally prepare youself to accept having to give plenty of time to recouperate. You have the rest of your life to think about & you certainly don't want to go though your later years in horrid pain. |

Well my ortho determined based on my PT results that i have loose shoulder capsules causing instability. Of which i opted to have them surgically repaired. Both arms, 16 week or so recovery. I'm not sure if this is the right route i should taken but 1 year of PT has gotten me little to no progress so this seems like the next best step. I'm just worried something may go wrong and ill be left worse off, but apparently that doesn't happen with this kind of surgery things can either stay the same or get better. With a 90% chance of full recovery and a 75% chance of full sport recovery im willing to give it a shot, this chronic bullshit pain is on my last nerve.

Overlord,
I lived with a SLAP tear for about 4-5 yrs...that was absolutely stupid. I did not realize that until I had the repair done and pt. I am so glad I had my shoulder repaired!! I do still feel pain in it, especially if I sleep on it the wrong way. I had to have some hardware installed .... 2mm titanium screws....arthroscopic. I say don't continue too live in pain, nor continue to abuse your shoulders more. Just my 2cents. Banjo |

When is your surgery scheduled? I'm scheduled to have a Bankart procedure to repair the labrum and to stitch up the capsule. Although I'm not thrilled be out of the gym for this long, my inability to do any type of press has gotten unacceptable.

This wednesday for my right arm then probably a month or so for my left. And im beyond excited/nervous to either have the pain completey or nearly completely go away and to get back into the gym and eat like i weigh 300 pounds and regain the 50 pounds i've lost through all of this.

So here i sit, 4 weeks after my first procedure, i can pretty much do the basics now whiping my ass ect. Still some pain in the front from the little tie they put in i think but other then that the pain is alot better and no where near as constant. Having another appt tomorrow with my doc to see whats going down as far as my left side goes. One day at a time. Contemplating carrying this into a journal and tearing the log book a new ass.

Heres some pictures from inside my shoulder during the arthroscopic procedure.
Inflamation, and the smooth white tendons i believe they are is a good sign. http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/9170/scan0001ax5.jpg Part of the tie they put on my labrum after they sewed it up. http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/7199/scan0002ee5.jpg My fucked up labrum in all of its glory before the stitch was put in, the dots are bursitis. http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/4812/scan0003di2.jpg Couple more shots of my bursitis and torn labrum. http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/9166/scan0004zw3.jpg Now im positive this isn't shit compared to what some of the guys i look up to have went through-Future, PTAaron, and im sure there is others. But to the guys younger then 19 that train they're asses off to look like some of the greats some day, this was a lesson to me that you can lift all the weight you want and do all kinds of programs and crazy sets, but if you don't eat like a champ you'll run into problems like my nieve self did. Even after i figured out that i was growing more off of all the shakes and eating then i ever was moving the weights and doing the sets. They just help move the progress along.

as a guy who assists in Shoulder/Ortho procedures id say that if its as serious as you are talking then id go ahead and have it done. If you can afford (taking time off work etc.) get that stuff fixed asap simply because itll only get worse (scar tissue is a B@#$$) youll be ok, just let me know if you have any specific questions. good luck!!

Started PT Round 3 today for my right shoulder, its feeling great, aside from the stitch i feel from the tie in and usual atrophy that comes with not using a muscle for awhile. PT says i should be back to feeling like nothing ever happened by feb/march which i hope but im taking it one day at a time. Getting through this left shoulder surgery next should be the big obsticle, seeing as i drive with my left. Im keeping my positive outlook and gunna just keep my head down and work hard. I get alot of motivation from the vids/pics i see of people here, not just the pros. Hopefully i can pull out of this and achieve my goals.

Hell, muscle coming back and everything is going great, now really starting to contimplate getting the same surgery on my other shoulder and going through it all again. I guess its better to do it now but i'd really like to avoid having to do it again. I gues my MRI/athrogram shall tell. Either way i don't think ill ever be able to flat bench again. As well as do any overhead pressing movements.

Hmm been awhile, shoulders been doing great the last couple of days, had a nasty spill on the ice in a gas station parking lot of all places and thought it was all over. I guess my labrum has reattached itself, now i have to wait until the cartillage builds back up in the joint which takes awhile i guess. Still kicking around the other shoulder surgery, i feel like that labrum is torn aswell but i can't get the doc to ok it for even an arthrogram yet which sucks ass cause i want to have this done in the winter that way i can train in the spring/summer. Things are finally starting to look up, still cannot wait to get back in a gym, im going insane.

Just be patient. It'll come. I recommend super slow training for right now. Also get some pGHt to rub in your shoulder. I do think it helped me. Be safe.

Good advice Future
![]() It has to be extremely hard on you Overlord, but you have to be patient. Especially since you reinjured that shoulder. Do you take any fish oil supplements? |
