Do not worry about a hijack man, haha. I love powerlifting, I love talking about it and will always try to help to bring people into it.

First, go check the link I posted in your journal to see which federation you may be lifting in near you. This way you will know what gear you can and can not use.

Since you have been lifting for around 6 years, you could get right into gear if you wanted to. I believe the key is to at least have some base strength before getting into gear. But I do not believe some certain magic numbers must be hit before getting into gear. So someone who has never lifted prolly shouldnt be putting gear on. But I do believe that one should train in what they are gonna compete in. Also the gear takes a while to learn so getting into it early helps one learn how to use it.

Since you are on a budget and have not competed before, maybe do a meet with only your belt and wraps first. Make sure this is something you are gonna want to do and commit to. After that, then you can look at getting gear so this way when you throw down some money you know you will use the stuff.

There is no all in one suit. If you pull sumo, you can prolly squat and deadlift in the same suit. If you pull conventional you can either pull with only the belt or get a deadlift suit made for conventional stance. Then for bench, thats a shirt.

I dont know what you have access to, but I am sure you have access to Metal and Titan. Another thing, if/when you get into gear, make sure you have training partners to help.

53greystret are you using lbs or kg's here? if your getting a 600+squat surely your deads would be near there? if its 225kg then it is near there. or are you doing some sort of specialisation stuff? dont worry i get confused often lol

JT, those are pounds listed, yes. Quadrupled mini bands add roughly 200 lbs of tension to the top of the lift. The chains are 20 lbs each. So the last couple of singles had 465 at the top. Nothing crazy heavy at all, but this was done as a dynamic effort workout. Concentration on speed and form. This set up really teaches you how to pull the bar from the floor, cuz if you dont pull with authority the bands will rip the bar right out of your hands.

thanks for clearing that for me GS definately sounds more like a GS workout now!

quick couple of questions:

1) as i dont have access to this chain and band type training will it eventually hinder my powerliting gains? do i need to worry about this stuff before ive even entered my first comp? (sorry that was two lol)

2) do you know of any good powerlifting books i could purchase and read up on? the only one i have is "powerlifting" by Groves . B and have studied it however from what ive seen regarding your training and the actual PL forum it makes the book look like childsplay and really basic - for example it doesnt tell you about band training or chain training board presses etc

JT, no, you do not need to worry about bands or chains before your first meet. They are simply tools which can be used.

Instead of books, go to www.elitefts.com and start reading the articles, and keep reading. If you have any questions about them, feel free to ask.

Yeah, the other lifts wouldnt count. You have to get a good lift in all 3 to get a total.
